Description

The Taurus 92 Tungsten is the dressed-up, steel-framed version of the open-slide 9mm: seventeen rounds, a five-inch barrel, a tungsten grey Cerakote slide over a black Cerakote steel frame with a beavertail and an accessory rail, and Altamont walnut grip panels.

Two things separate it from the standard gun. The frame is steel rather than aluminium, which adds weight in exactly the place that makes a pistol shoot softly. And the finish and grips are a step up — a two-tone Cerakote and real chequered wood instead of a uniform black with rubber panels. The Taurus 92 Tungsten is the same proven pattern, built heavier and finished better.

What is on the pistol

  • The Taurus 92 Tungsten holds seventeen rounds plus one, with a five-inch barrel and the open-top slide that defines this pattern.
  • A tungsten grey Cerakote slide over a black Cerakote steel frame — the contrast is the point, and Cerakote is tough enough to live on a working gun.
  • A steel frame with a beavertail, so the hand sits high and clear of the hammer, and a Picatinny rail under the dust cover.
  • Altamont chequered walnut grip panels, which are slimmer and better-looking than rubber.
  • A frame-mounted manual safety that can be applied with the hammer cocked, so the Taurus 92 Tungsten carries cocked and locked if you want it to.

What a steel frame does

  • Weight is the whole story. A steel-framed five-inch 9mm barely moves under recoil — the sights stay on target and follow-up shots are genuinely quick.
  • That weight is also why this is not a carry gun. It is a home, range and duty-style pistol, and it will pull a belt down if you try to wear it all day.
  • The first shot is double action and long; every shot after is single action and short. That transition is a skill worth practising deliberately.
  • There is no optic cut. The sights are fixed, plain and exactly what this pattern has always worn.
  • Wood grips are slimmer than rubber and transmit a little more of the impulse. On a steel-framed 9mm there is almost nothing to transmit, so the Taurus 92 Tungsten gets the looks for free.

9mm Luger is standardised by SAAMI, which is why a service-pattern pistol like this one runs on anything from cheap brass-cased range ammunition to premium defensive loads without adjustment. A five-inch barrel is the length most factory ballistics are measured from, so what is printed on the box is close to what this pistol actually delivers.

The standard alloy-framed version is stocked as the Taurus PT92. For something smaller in 9mm, the G3, the GX4 Carry or the GX2 Compact. If you like metal-framed hammer guns but want a milder cartridge, the Taurus 58 in .380.

Why the Taurus 92 Tungsten earns its place

  • The Taurus 92 Tungsten has a steel frame, which is the single biggest thing you can do to make a 9mm shoot softly.
  • A frame-mounted safety that works with the hammer cocked, unlike the original pattern’s slide-mounted decocker.
  • Seventeen rounds and a five-inch barrel at a price well under what this pattern usually costs.
  • Altamont walnut and a two-tone Cerakote finish, neither of which is standard at this money.
  • Forty years of service history behind the design, and holsters on every shelf.

This is a home-defence pistol, a range gun and a first full-size 9mm — the weight and the long sight radius make it genuinely easy to shoot well. It also suits anyone who simply wants a handsome metal pistol that is not a 1911. The Taurus 92 Tungsten is not a carry gun, has no optic cut, and makes no attempt at either; what it is, is a great deal of pistol for the money.
