Description
The Taurus GX2 Compact 9mm is what a serviceable defensive pistol costs now, and the answer is less than most people assume. Thirteen rounds of 9mm, a 3.38-inch barrel, a matte black alloy steel slide and a polymer frame with a Picatinny rail moulded into it. It is not a budget pistol pretending to be something else; it is a compact service pistol without the features that add cost and little else.
This is part number 1-GX2931. If your criteria are capacity, a rail for a light, and a size you will actually carry, the Taurus GX2 Compact 9mm meets all three.
What you get for the money
- Thirteen plus one, which matches pistols costing twice as much
- A Picatinny rail moulded into the frame, so a weapon light needs no adapter
- A 3.38-inch barrel, short enough to conceal and long enough to shoot well
- An alloy steel slide with a matte black finish rather than a painted coating
- A textured polymer grip with no backstrap system to lose parts from
Where the cost was taken out
- No factory optic cut on this version; the GX2 TORO variant has one
- No interchangeable backstraps, so the grip is one size
- Fixed sights rather than an adjustable or night set
- A simpler finish than a nitride or Cerakote treatment
- None of those omissions affect whether the pistol shoots or feeds

Buy the light before anything else
If the Taurus GX2 Compact 9mm is going to sit in a drawer or by a bed, the rail on the frame is the most useful thing on the pistol. Identifying what you are pointing at is a legal and moral requirement, not a preference, and a weapon light is the only way to do it with both hands on the gun.
After that, spend money on ammunition rather than accessories. CCI Blazer Brass is cheap enough to let you shoot fifty rounds a fortnight, and that will do more for your ability to use this pistol than any part you could bolt to it. Cartridge dimensions and maximum pressures are published by SAAMI.
A short barrel and your carry load
A 3.38-inch barrel gives up velocity against a full-size pistol, and defensive bullets are designed to expand inside a velocity window. Most current designs work from a barrel this length; not all do.
Run a full box of whatever you intend to carry through the Taurus GX2 Compact 9mm before you trust it. That tells you two things at once: whether the load cycles reliably in your gun, and where it prints against the sights.
What Taurus warranty cover actually means
Taurus operates a lifetime repair policy through a service facility in the United States, which matters more on an inexpensive pistol than on an expensive one. A gun at this price is worth repairing rather than replacing, and the route to doing that exists.
Why this pistol earns its place
- Thirteen rounds and an accessory rail at a price most makers reserve for six-shot guns
- The Taurus GX2 Compact 9mm is a compact service pistol rather than a stripped-down pocket gun
- An alloy steel slide, not a coated casting
- A sensible first pistol, or a sensible second one to leave somewhere
- Lifetime repair policy with a service facility in the United States
The Taurus GX2 Compact 9mm suits a first defensive pistol, a spare to keep at a second property, or anyone who would rather spend the difference on ammunition and training. If you want a red dot, the TORO version of the GX2 has the slide cut for one.
