Description
The Taurus G3 Black is the plain, all-black version of the full-size G3 and the least expensive way into the platform. Taurus catalogues it as 1-G3B941-15: 15+1 rounds of 9mm Luger, a 4-inch matte stainless barrel, a serrated steel slide finished in matte black Tenifer, and a black polymer frame carrying a Picatinny rail.
Tenifer is the reason to look twice at the finish. It is a nitriding process rather than a coating, so the hardened surface is part of the steel instead of a layer sitting on top of it. That makes it resistant to holster wear in a way paint and most sprayed finishes are not, and it is the sort of detail that usually appears two price brackets higher.
MAG5 Firearms has the Taurus G3 Black in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer paperwork with your dealer.
What you get at this price
- Fifteen rounds plus one chambered, which is duty capacity and not a compromise.
- A 4-inch barrel and a full-size grip, the combination that makes a pistol easy to shoot accurately.
- The Taurus G3 Black uses a nitrided slide surface rather than an applied coating, so wear shows late.
- A Picatinny rail under the dust cover, which matters on a pistol that often doubles as a house gun.
- Spare magazines that cost a fraction of what most manufacturers charge, which is how a range session gets efficient.

Handling and controls
- Deep serrations front and rear, which make press checks and malfunction clearing straightforward with cold or wet hands.
- Memory pads molded into the frame place the support hand in the same spot on every draw.
- Striker-fired action with restrike capability, so a hard primer gets a second strike without racking the slide.
- A full-length grip, so all three fingers are on the gun rather than one hanging below the magazine.
- The Taurus G3 Black carries enough slide mass to keep the muzzle flat between shots.

Ammunition is the easy part. All 9mm Luger from a reputable maker is produced to the chamber and pressure standard published by SAAMI, so practice ball and defensive hollow points both headspace and cycle in this barrel. We stock CCI Blazer Brass 9mm by the case for practice and Buffalo Bore 9mm +P for carry.
The same pistol with a stainless slide and adjustable sights is the Taurus G3 Stainless. For something smaller, the GX2 Compact is the natural step down, and the TX 9 Full Size TORO adds a factory optic cut. Compare the rest of our semi-automatic handguns first.
Why the G3 earns its place
- The Taurus G3 Black is one of the least expensive full-size 9mm pistols on the market that does not feel like one.
- Fifteen rounds, a rail and a nitrided slide at a price where most of that list is optional.
- Restrike capability is worth having on a gun that may see a mixed diet of ammunition.
- Magazines and holsters are cheap and widely stocked, which keeps the cost of ownership down.
- Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.
This is a first centerfire pistol for a lot of people, and it should be. The Taurus G3 Black costs little enough that the difference goes into ammunition, which is the part that actually builds skill, and it is forgiving enough at the range that the practice is worth doing. It also earns a spot as a house gun, where capacity and a light rail matter more than concealment.
Ordering is quick. Choose the pistol, tell us which FFL should receive it, and we handle the dealer side. If you have not lined up a transfer dealer, call us and we will help you find one nearby.
Magazines for the Taurus G3 Black

The Taurus G3 Black ships with 15-round magazines and there is a straightforward upgrade: the Taurus G3 17-round magazine adds two rounds and sits very close to flush on a full-size frame. We keep those in very large numbers, which is one of the quiet advantages of buying a Taurus – spares are cheap and always available.
One fitment point worth knowing. The G3C is the compact version of this pistol and it has its own shorter magazine. A G3C magazine will physically run in a full-size G3, leaving a gap under the grip, but a full-size G3 magazine will not fit a G3C at all. If you own both, keep them labelled.
The Taurus G3 Black is easy to feed. For range work, CCI Blazer Brass 9mm 115 grain is the sensible bulk load and we stock it very deep. The G3 has a conventional locked-breech action and is not fussy about ammunition; a 4 inch barrel is also long enough that standard defensive loads perform the way their designers intended, which is not true of the little sub-compacts.
How the Taurus G3 Black compares across the range
The Taurus G3 in stainless is the same pistol with a stainless slide, which resists weather better and costs a little more. The gray-framed G3 ships with both a 15 and a 17-round magazine in the box, which is worth comparing on price if you were going to buy a spare anyway. If you want something smaller and newer, the Taurus GX2 Compact is the current compact carry gun.
Taurus also backs the Taurus G3 Black with a limited lifetime repair policy, which is unusual at this price and which the company has become noticeably better about honoring in recent years. Combined with magazines that cost a fraction of what the premium brands charge, the running cost of a Taurus G3 over a decade is genuinely low.
What keeps people coming back to the Taurus G3 Black is simple: it is a full-size, 15+1, striker-fired 9mm with a rail and usable sights at a price where most of the market is selling sub-compacts. It is not a competition pistol and we would not sell it as one, but as a first handgun, a nightstand gun or a truck gun it is very hard to argue with.
