A cheap red dot sight and a good one can look the same on a shelf. The difference shows up after a few thousand rounds: whether the dot holds zero, whether the buttons still work, and whether the company honors its warranty. We stock the makers that do.
If you are shopping for a pistol red dot, start with the footprint your slide is cut for, then pick a size that matches the gun. If you need a red dot for AR-15 use, a tube-style sight with a lower 1/3 mount is the simplest setup that works.
Where $300 stops: the Trijicon RMR and SRO and most Aimpoint models sit above this line. They are excellent, but for most shooters the optics below do the job just as well for less.
What to look for
Five things worth checking before you spend the money.
Footprint
For a pistol, the optic has to match your slide cut. RMR, RMSc, and Shield patterns are the most common. Get this wrong and nothing else matters.
Reticle
A 2 or 3 MOA dot is precise. A circle-dot reticle is faster up close. Many Holosun models let you switch between the two.
Battery
Look for long battery life, a side-loading battery, or solar backup. Pulling an optic to change a battery means checking zero again.
Durability
An aluminum or titanium housing and a proven track record matter more than features. Closed emitters shrug off dirt and rain.
Warranty
Ask what happens when it fails. The makers on our list back their optics, and that support is worth more than an extra reticle.

Questions we actually get
Open emitter or closed emitter?
An open emitter is smaller and fits most carry pistols. A closed emitter seals out rain, lint, and mud, and is the better choice for a rifle or a duty-style pistol. Both work well if you keep the lens clean.
Red dot or green dot?
Green is easier for most eyes to pick up in daylight. Red uses less battery. Pick the color you see best, then practice with it.
Will it fit my pistol?
Check your slide’s footprint. RMR, RMSc, and Shield footprints are the most common, and some pistols need an adapter plate. Tell us your model and we will confirm fit before you buy.
Do I need a mount for my rifle?
Most tube-style red dots include a mount. For an AR-15, a lower 1/3 co-witness height lets you use your iron sights through the glass.
