Description

The Taurus 58 Stainless is a full-size, hammer-fired .380 ACP with a four-inch barrel, fifteen rounds and a matte stainless finish over an aluminium frame, a stainless slide and a stainless barrel.

Almost every .380 sold today is a small, light pocket pistol, and a small light pistol makes even a mild cartridge feel sharp. The Taurus 58 Stainless does the opposite: full-size frame, metal construction, proper grip, four inches of barrel. The result is one of the softest-shooting centre-fire pistols on the market, in a finish that will not mind being carried against a body or left in a damp drawer.

What is in the gun

  • The Taurus 58 Stainless holds fifteen rounds plus one of .380 ACP — roughly double what a pocket .380 holds.
  • A four-inch matte stainless barrel inside a matte stainless serrated slide.
  • A matte stainless aluminium frame with a beavertail, so the web of the hand sits high and clear of the hammer.
  • Checkered black polymer grip panels against the pale frame, which is where the Taurus 58 Stainless gets its look.
  • An exposed hammer with a frame-mounted safety lever, and fixed sights.

Why stainless, and who a full-size .380 suits

  • Stainless resists corrosion in the metal rather than under a coating. A pistol carried close to the body lives in a warm, salty, humid place, and coatings wear through exactly where a holster rubs.
  • Recoil is genuinely light. Between the mild cartridge, the four-inch barrel and the weight of a metal frame, the Taurus 58 Stainless is about as gentle as a centre-fire pistol gets.
  • That makes it a serious option for someone with arthritis, a hand injury or reduced grip strength who still wants real capacity.
  • Be clear-eyed about the cartridge: .380 ACP carries meaningfully less energy than 9mm. It is the right answer when recoil or slide strength is a genuine constraint, not a default.
  • There is no accessory rail, so a light means a grip-mounted or trigger-guard unit rather than a rail mount.
  • A four-inch metal-framed pistol is a belt or nightstand gun, whatever the calibre marked on the barrel.

.380 ACP — properly 9mm Browning Short — is standardised by SAAMI at a considerably lower pressure than 9mm Luger, which is why pistols chambered for it can be built simpler and lighter. From a four-inch barrel the better modern defensive loads do far more than they manage from the two-and-a-half-inch barrels the cartridge is usually asked to work in, so this is .380 close to its best.

The black version of the same pistol is stocked as the Taurus 58 in .380 ACP. For .380 in something concealable, look at the GX4 Carry in .380; for a 9mm of similar size and layout, the metal-framed Taurus PT92.

Why the Taurus 58 Stainless earns its place

  • The Taurus 58 Stainless holds fifteen rounds, which almost nothing else in the cartridge in the cartridge offers.
  • Stainless steel and aluminium throughout, for a pistol that will be carried rather than admired.
  • A metal frame and a four-inch barrel, so the recoil impulse is genuinely soft.
  • A full grip and a beavertail, comfortable for a whole range session.
  • A hammer you can see and a safety you can feel.

This suits a home-defence and range pistol for someone who finds 9mm recoil unpleasant or a slide hard to rack, and anyone who simply likes a hammer-fired metal pistol and wants one that will not rust. The Taurus 58 Stainless is not a concealed-carry gun in the modern sense and makes no attempt to be; if that is the requirement, a micro-compact is the right tool. What this is, is the most pleasant way to put fifteen rounds of centre-fire ammunition on a target.
