Description
The Raging Hunter 460 Black is the all-black version of the longest barrel Taurus builds on the .460 S&W Magnum. Frame, cylinder and shroud are all matte black oxide, with only the exposed stainless barrel section breaking it up, and the whole thing finishes in a slotted muzzle brake that carries the front sight.
The Raging Hunter 460 Black holds five rounds, with a full-length Picatinny rail along the top of the shroud and accessory rail sections underneath. This is a scoped hunting revolver and it is bought by people who intend to shoot it off sticks at distance.
What the all-black build changes
- The Raging Hunter 460 Black puts matte black oxide on the frame and cylinder as well as the shroud, where the two-tone gun shows a stainless frame
- No bright work to flash at an animal on a still morning, which is the practical argument for a black hunting gun
- 10.50-inch barrel, the longest in the .460 range, giving the cartridge the most velocity it will produce from a revolver
- A large slotted muzzle brake rather than gas ports, which is what makes the Raging Hunter 460 Black shootable
- Full-length Picatinny rail on top with room to position a scope for your own eye relief, plus forward rail sections
- Thumb safety, exposed hammer, adjustable rear sight and a cushioned rubber grip
- The same three-cartridge cylinder: .460 S&W Magnum, .454 Casull and .45 Colt

What to plan for before you buy
- A scoped 10.5-inch revolver needs a chest holster or a scabbard. Budget for one at the same time
- Optic choice matters more than on a rifle. A long-eye-relief pistol scope or a red dot, not a rifle scope
- The brake is loud and directs gas sideways. Doubled hearing protection, and give anyone next to you room
- Practise with .45 Colt. Burning .460 to learn a trigger is an expensive way to do it
- The Raging Hunter 460 Black is heavy. That is what makes it pleasant to shoot and unpleasant to carry far without a rig
- Check the barrel stamp and the manual rather than assuming a cartridge fits. The three it takes are .460, .454 Casull and .45 Colt

The .460 S&W Magnum is a standardised cartridge with chamber dimensions and pressure ceilings published by SAAMI, and the reason this cylinder also takes .454 Casull and .45 Colt is that the three share a case diameter and step down in length. Do not treat that as a power ladder: a hot .454 load will outrun a mild .460 hunting load, so read the box rather than the headstamp.
One thing that surprises new owners. With a brake this effective, the recoil you feel is much less than the numbers suggest, but the concussion is much worse. Shooters often describe a Raging Hunter 460 Black as easier on the hands and harder on the ears than a shorter gun in the same calibre. Outdoors that is a good trade; on a covered range it makes you unpopular.
Why this revolver earns its place
- The most velocity a .460 S&W will give you out of a revolver
- A muzzle brake rather than ports, which is the more effective of the two systems
- Rail space to mount an optic where it suits you rather than where the gun dictates
- Three chamberings from one cylinder, so the Raging Hunter 460 Black can be practised with cheaply
- A uniform matte black finish with nothing to catch light in the field
- Adjustable irons as a backup if an optic fails miles from the truck
Handgun hunters and guides who want reach without a rifle, and shooters who want to know what a revolver cartridge can really do. Nobody should buy this as a general-purpose handgun; as a scoped hunting rig the Raging Hunter 460 Black is among the most capable things on the shelf.
If you prefer the stainless frame, the 10.5-inch two-tone .460 is the same gun in the other finish. For a carrying length, the 6.75-inch and the 5.12-inch two-tone are far easier to wear.
For more cartridge, the 10-inch .500 S&W in black is the next step up. For less recoil and much cheaper ammunition, the .454 Casull Raging Hunter covers two of the three cartridges this one chambers.
