Description
The Taurus Raging Hunter 460 is a five-shot .460 S&W Magnum with a 6.75-inch ported barrel, a full-length Picatinny rail moulded into the black anodised shroud, a matte stainless frame, a matte black cylinder and a manual thumb safety.
The .460 S&W Magnum is the flattest-shooting revolver cartridge in general production — it was designed to be a genuine hundred-and-fifty-yard handgun round rather than a close-cover one. What makes the Taurus Raging Hunter 460 more interesting still is that the chamber is long enough to take two shorter cartridges as well, so one revolver covers an enormous range of power.
Three cartridges, one cylinder
- The Taurus Raging Hunter 460 chamber accepts .460 S&W Magnum, .454 Casull and .45 Colt — the three share a bore and differ in case length, longest to shortest.
- That means you can practise on mild .45 Colt, work up through .454 Casull, and load .460 when the shot actually matters.
- Five chambers, with a dual lock-up — the crane locks at the front as well as the rear, which is what these pressures demand.
- A 6.75-inch ported barrel. The ports vent upward near the muzzle and hold the front sight down between shots.
- A manual thumb safety, which is unusual on a revolver and welcome on one this powerful.
- An adjustable rear sight, an exposed hammer and a cushioned rubber grip on the Taurus Raging Hunter 460.

Honest notes before you buy
- Ports are loud and they throw blast sideways. Everyone within thirty feet needs hearing protection on every shot, not just the shooter.
- Recoil on the Taurus Raging Hunter 460 with full loads is serious. The weight, the ports and the cushioned grip make it manageable, not mild — expect a cylinder or two per session rather than a box.
- Never assume a shorter case is a lighter load. Some .454 Casull ammunition is loaded hotter than the mildest .460; read the box rather than the case length.
- Clean the front of the chambers when you move back up from .45 Colt or .454. The carbon ring a shorter case leaves behind is what makes a longer one stick.
- Use the rail. A cartridge that shoots this flat is wasted on iron sights.

All three cartridges this revolver accepts are standardised by SAAMI, at wildly different pressure ceilings — which is exactly why the chamber can be cut for the longest of them and still headspace the shorter two correctly. It is also why the ammunition choice matters more here than on almost any other revolver: the spread between a cowboy .45 Colt load and a full .460 is enormous.
Other Raging Hunters in stock: the .500 S&W at 8.38 inches, the ten-inch .500, the two-tone .44 Magnum and the seven-shot .357. For straight-wall deer seasons, the moon-clip .350 Legend.
Why the Taurus Raging Hunter 460 earns its place
- The Taurus Raging Hunter 460 gives three cartridges from one cylinder, spanning a range no other chambering matches.
- The flattest-shooting production revolver cartridge there is, on a barrel long enough to use it.
- Factory porting, a cushioned grip and a thumb safety.
- A rail moulded into the shroud, with no separate base to shoot loose.
- Dual cylinder lock-up, built for the pressure.
This is a serious handgun hunter’s revolver — deer, elk, hogs and bear at distances most revolvers cannot honestly manage — and a defensive sidearm in big-animal country. It also makes sense for someone who wants one big-bore that can be shot cheaply with .45 Colt and seriously with .460. The Taurus Raging Hunter 460 is not a first revolver, not a range plinker and nothing to do with concealed carry.
