Description
The Taurus Judge Public Defender is the small-frame Judge: five chambers that swallow either .45 Colt cartridges or 2-1/2 inch .410 shotshells, in a package short enough to live in a console, a nightstand or a large-pocket holster. This Taurus Judge Public Defender wears a Flat Dark Earth finish on the steel frame and barrel with a matte black oxide cylinder, and a bright orange fibre-optic front sight sits on top.
It is the most compact way Taurus packages the Judge idea, and the two-tone FDE build is the one that looks least like everything else on the shelf.
What the Taurus Judge Public Defender gives you
- The Taurus Judge Public Defender takes five chambers of .45 Colt or 2-1/2 inch .410 shotshells, in whatever mix you choose to load
- 2.50-inch barrel on a small frame, the shortest configuration in the Judge range
- Flat Dark Earth finish on the steel frame and barrel, set against a matte black oxide cylinder
- Fibre-optic front sight in orange, which finds the target faster than a plain blade in poor light
- Black Ribber grip that cushions a recoil impulse sharper than the size of the gun suggests
- Exposed hammer, so you can thumb it back for a slow deliberate shot
- Transfer bar safety, so the firing pin cannot reach a primer until the trigger is fully back

Read this before you buy shotshells for it
- The cylinder takes 2-1/2 inch .410 only. Do not attempt to load 3-inch magnum shells. The barrel is stamped 4510 for exactly this reason
- The barrel is rifled, which is what makes it a handgun rather than a short shotgun. Rifling also spins the shot charge outward, so patterns open fast
- Across a room, a .410 defensive load does its job. At twenty-five yards the pattern is far too wide to rely on
- Buckshot loads designed for the Judge pattern far better than birdshot, which is a snake and pest load and nothing more
- The .45 Colt side is the serious one. A 250-grain lead bullet from a Taurus Judge Public Defender is an old and very capable cartridge
- Stick to standard-pressure .45 Colt. Heavy “Ruger only” and +P loads are built for far stronger guns and have no business in this one

.45 Colt dates to 1873 and .410 bore predates most shotgun gauges still in use. Both are standardised, with dimensions and pressure ceilings published by SAAMI, and it is that shared case diameter that lets one cylinder accept a rimmed revolver cartridge and a shotshell without either being a compromise.
An honest assessment. The Taurus Judge Public Defender is a close-range specialist, not a general-purpose handgun. Five rounds, a short sight radius, and a recoil impulse with full .45 Colt loads that is brisk in a gun this size. What you get in return is a level of ammunition flexibility no semi-automatic can match, and a gun that is genuinely useful against snakes, vermin and two-legged problems at conversational distance.
Why this revolver earns its place
- Two completely different ammunition types from one cylinder, chosen to suit the problem
- A steel frame that soaks up more recoil than the polymer-framed versions of the same gun
- The fibre-optic front sight on the Taurus Judge Public Defender works when a plain blade disappears
- Revolver simplicity: nothing to rack, nothing to jam, nothing to forget under pressure
- Compact enough for a truck, a boat, a nightstand or a tackle bag
- Flat Dark Earth over black is a finish combination almost nobody else offers at this price
Home and property defenders, rural owners dealing with snakes and vermin, boat and truck owners, and anyone who wants a close-range gun that needs very little practice to be useful. The Taurus Judge Public Defender is widely bought and widely misunderstood; buy it knowing it is a twenty-five-foot proposition and it will serve you well.
For the same gun with a stainless cylinder, the FDE Public Defender is the direct sibling. In all black on a polymer frame, look at the black polymer Public Defender, and in stainless the stainless version.
If you want a longer barrel and the option of 3-inch shells, the Judge Compact steps up in size. For a factory optic cut, the Judge TORO takes a red dot straight out of the box.
Every Taurus Judge Public Defender ships with the factory case, the manual and a lock. Transfers go to your FFL and we handle our end of the paperwork the same day.
