Description
The Taurus Judge Compact is the short-barrelled version of the revolver that created its own category. Taurus catalogues this one as 2-441031T: a five-shot wheelgun with a 3-inch barrel, a matte black oxide finish over an alloy steel barrel, cylinder and frame, and a cylinder long enough to accept both 45 Colt cartridges and 2-1/2 inch 410 shotshells.
That dual chambering is the whole point. Loaded with 45 Colt it behaves like a conventional large-bore revolver. Loaded with 410 it puts a pattern of buckshot downrange at close quarters. Most owners run a mix, and the Taurus Judge Compact will digest them in any order you drop into the cylinder.
MAG5 Firearms has this one in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.
How the two chamberings actually behave
- 45 Colt gives you a heavy, slow bullet that has been solving problems since 1873, with modest recoil in a revolver this weight.
- 410 buckshot spreads quickly out of a rifled barrel. Useful at across-the-room distance, not a substitute for a shotgun at range.
- 410 birdshot has a place around a barn or a woodpile where a bullet would carry too far.
- The cylinder is bored straight through, so no adapter, moon clip or chamber insert is needed to switch between the two.
- A 3-inch barrel keeps the Taurus Judge Compact short enough to live in a truck console or a bedside drawer.

Build, sights and safety
- Alloy steel barrel, cylinder and frame, all finished in matte black oxide to cut glare and resist corrosion.
- Fiber optic front sight, which picks up ambient light and shows as a bright dot even in a dim room.
- Ribbed black rubber grip that spreads recoil across the palm rather than concentrating it at the web of the hand.
- Exposed hammer, so the Taurus Judge Compact can be thumbed back for a lighter single-action press or fired double action.
- Transfer bar safety, which physically blocks the firing pin until the trigger is fully pressed.

One point worth being clear about: this cylinder is cut for 2-1/2 inch 410 shells. Do not attempt to chamber 3-inch magnum shells in it. The 45 Colt side is standard pressure, and both cartridges are produced to the dimensional and pressure standards published by SAAMI, so factory ammunition from any reputable maker is appropriate. We stock Remington Performance WheelGun 45 Colt and cowboy-action loads for practice.
If you want the same idea with a longer barrel and a bigger grip, look at the Judge Home Defender. For a conventional six-shot 45 Colt single action, the Taurus Deputy is worth a look. The rest of our revolvers and handguns are listed alongside it.
Why the Judge Compact earns its place
- The Taurus Judge Compact covers two very different jobs with one cylinder and no conversion parts.
- A revolver has no magazine to seat wrong and no slide to short-stroke, which matters for a gun that may sit untouched for months.
- The 3-inch barrel and rubber grip keep it small enough to store where you actually need it.
- Five rounds of 45 Colt is a serious payload from a handgun this size.
- Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the first owner.
The Taurus Judge Compact makes the most sense as a truck gun, a farm gun or a bedside revolver for someone who values simplicity over capacity. It is also a common choice for shooters who find a semi-automatic slide hard to work, since loading and firing a revolver asks far less of the hands.
