Description
The Taurus 82 is a medium-frame service revolver of a type that has almost disappeared from the market: six rounds of .38 Special, a heavy four-inch barrel, fixed sights and a frame built for duty use rather than concealment. It is the kind of revolver that used to sit in every police holster in the country, and it is still one of the most shootable handguns you can buy.
This Taurus 82 is matte black oxide over alloy steel, with a black finger-grooved rubber grip. Note that the listing title has said blued in the past; the distributor record and the photographs both show a matte black oxide finish, which is what you will receive.
What the Taurus 82 is and why it still sells
- The Taurus 82 holds six rounds of .38 Special, rated for +P, in a medium frame with real chamber wall thickness behind it
- Heavy 4-inch barrel that puts weight forward, which is the single biggest reason this gun is easy to shoot well
- Fixed sights machined into the frame: a front blade and a groove along the top strap, with nothing to adjust or lose
- Matte black oxide finish over alloy steel, plain and functional rather than decorative
- Black finger-grooved rubber grip that fills the hand and takes the edge off +P loads
- Exposed hammer for single-action precision, with a smooth double-action pull for everything else
- Transfer bar safety, so the firing pin cannot reach a primer unless the trigger is fully to the rear

Why a medium frame changes everything
- A snub .38 is a compromise dictated by concealment. The Taurus 82 makes none of those compromises, and it shows on paper
- Weight absorbs recoil. Full +P loads out of this gun are mild in a way they simply are not out of a two-inch revolver
- A four-inch barrel gives a defensive load the space to reach its advertised velocity instead of half of it
- The longer sight radius is worth more accuracy than most shooters expect. Twenty-five yards is a reasonable proposition here
- This is not a carry gun. It is a home, range, truck and training revolver, and it is honest about that
- Six rounds, a smooth trigger and no manual of arms to speak of. Anyone can be taught to run it in an afternoon

.38 Special has been in production since 1898 and is one of the most thoroughly standardised cartridges in the world, with pressure and dimensional specifications published by SAAMI. The +P rating is part of that standard rather than a marketing claim, which is why a revolver is either built for it or is not.
One honest note on value. The Taurus 82 is not fashionable and it will never be the gun anyone photographs for a magazine. What it is, is a lot of steel and a good trigger for the money, in a configuration that teaches marksmanship better than almost anything else on the shelf. If you are buying a first handgun for a house rather than a pocket, it deserves a serious look before a plastic pistol does.
Why this revolver earns its place
- A full-size service revolver at a price well below what a comparable pistol costs
- Weight and barrel length that make .38 Special +P genuinely pleasant to shoot
- The Taurus 82 needs no training to operate under pressure: point, pull, repeat
- No magazine springs to take a set, no slide to short-stroke, nothing to forget
- Cheap ammunition, so it gets shot rather than stored
- Six rounds of a cartridge with more than a century of documented performance behind it
Home-defence buyers, new shooters, anyone teaching one, and shooters who want a range revolver that will outlast them. The Taurus 82 is also the right answer for a truck or barn gun, because there is very little about it to damage and nothing about it that minds being ignored.
If you need something you can actually conceal, the six-shot Taurus 856 is the same capacity in a small frame. For magnum capability, the 605 in .357 is the compact option and the eight-shot 608 is the full-size one.
For adjustable sights on a medium frame, the seven-shot Tracker 627 is the natural step up. And for cheap trigger practice alongside it, the 942 in .22 LR costs a fraction per round.
