Description
The Taurus Deputy 357 is a single-action revolver built on the 1873 pattern that everyone recognises: loading gate on the right, ejector rod housing along the barrel, a hammer you cock for every shot, and a grip shape that has not needed improving in a hundred and fifty years. This Taurus Deputy 357 is the 5.5-inch version in polished black, a deep gloss finish over steel that photographs far better than a matte gun and looks the part in a tooled leather holster.
Six rounds of .357 Magnum, or .38 Special when you want a quieter afternoon. Black checkered polymer grip panels, fixed sights, and a transfer bar safety hidden inside a design that otherwise looks entirely period-correct.
What the Taurus Deputy 357 does differently
- The Taurus Deputy 357 has a transfer bar safety, which means all six chambers are safe to load. An original Colt pattern had to be carried on an empty chamber and this one does not
- 5.5-inch barrel, the middle length of the classic three and the one most single-action shooters settle on
- Polished black steel on barrel, cylinder and frame, a proper gloss rather than a sprayed coating
- Loading gate and ejector rod, loaded and unloaded one chamber at a time exactly as the original was
- Six rounds of .357 Magnum, and .38 Special drops straight in for cheap practice
- Fixed sights: a blade front and a groove down the top strap, regulated at the factory
- Checkered black polymer grip panels that shrug off weather and sweat better than wood ever has

Living with a single action
- Every shot needs the hammer cocked. That is slower than a double action and it is also why single actions teach trigger control so well
- Loading is a ritual: open the gate, half-cock, rotate, drop a round in, repeat. It is part of the appeal, not a drawback
- Ejection is one case at a time with the rod. Budget an extra minute at the range and plan accordingly
- The plough-handle grip lets the gun roll in your hand under recoil, which is why .357 out of a Taurus Deputy 357 feels milder than it does out of a modern revolver
- Fixed sights mean you adjust by changing loads rather than by turning screws. Find the bullet weight that prints to point of aim and stay with it
- Single actions are not defensive handguns. This is a range gun, a cowboy action gun and a very handsome field revolver

One thing worth knowing before you buy. Polished black is beautiful and it shows every mark. A holster will put a wear line on the barrel within a season and fingerprints show up immediately. If that will bother you, the matte black version of the same gun is the sensible choice; if you like a revolver that looks like it has been used, the Taurus Deputy 357 in this finish ages very well.
Why this revolver earns its place
- A genuine single-action experience at a price that leaves money for ammunition
- The transfer bar means six rounds instead of five, which matters in cowboy action competition
- Polished black is the best-looking finish Taurus puts on the Taurus Deputy 357 line
- .38 Special practice keeps the running costs of a .357 revolver reasonable
- Steel construction throughout, with weight where it helps the sights sit still
- Nothing on it to break, adjust, batteries to change or springs to chase
Cowboy action shooters, collectors, anyone who grew up on westerns, and anyone who wants a range revolver that rewards a slow deliberate approach. The Taurus Deputy 357 will not win a defensive handgun comparison and it is not trying to; what it offers is an afternoon at the range that feels completely different from shooting a modern pistol.
If 5.5 inches is longer than you want, the 4.75-inch Deputy in polished black handles faster and carries easier. If you prefer a matte finish that hides wear, the matte black 5.5-inch Deputy is the same gun without the shine.
For the traditional big-bore chambering, the Deputy in .45 Colt is the cartridge the pattern was designed around. And if you want the same calibre in a modern double action, compare it against the Taurus 605 or the seven-shot Tracker 627.
