Description
The Taurus 605 357 Magnum is the small-frame, five-shot version of the cartridge, catalogued as 2-605021. Barrel, cylinder and frame are alloy steel finished in matte black oxide, the barrel measures 2 inches, and the chambering covers both 357 Magnum and 38 Special +P.
Two things make this gun worth owning. The first is that it is small enough to carry properly, which is more than can be said for most 357s. The second is the 38 Special option: the Taurus 605 357 Magnum will shoot a cartridge that costs a third as much and recoils a fraction as hard, which is what makes regular practice realistic.
MAG5 Firearms has it in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.
Being honest about a two-inch magnum
- A 357 Magnum load out of a 2-inch barrel produces a great deal of blast and flash, because much of the powder burns after the bullet has left.
- The velocity gain over a good 38 Special +P in the same gun is smaller than the price and the recoil suggest.
- Many experienced owners carry 38 Special +P in the Taurus 605 357 Magnum and keep the magnum option for when it is wanted.
- What the magnum chambering does guarantee is that nothing in either cartridge will overstress the gun.
- The longer cylinder also means factory 357 loads chamber and extract cleanly, with no fouling ring to scrub out of a 38-length chamber.

Build, grip and safety
- Alloy steel barrel, cylinder and frame, all finished in matte black oxide with no gloss to catch the light.
- Finger-grooved black rubber grip, which spreads recoil across the palm on a gun that needs the help.
- Exposed hammer, so the Taurus 605 357 Magnum can be thumbed back for a single-action press or fired double action.
- Transfer bar safety blocks the firing pin mechanically until the trigger is fully pressed.
- Fixed sights with nothing protruding to catch a pocket seam or a holster mouth.

For a four-inch barrel and six rounds, look at the Taurus Model 65. If 38 Special is enough, the six-shot 856 Stainless is the same size gun with an extra round. Browse the rest of our revolvers too.
Why the 605 earns its place
- The Taurus 605 357 Magnum is one of the few magnum revolvers small enough to be carried rather than admired.
- Two chamberings from one cylinder, and the cheap one is the one you will shoot most.
- Matte black oxide is the right finish for a gun that lives in a pocket or a drawer.
- Speedloaders, speed strips and holsters for small-frame Taurus revolvers are widely stocked.
- Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.
This suits someone who wants the option of a magnum without owning a gun they cannot carry. The Taurus 605 357 Magnum is a sound backup to a semi-automatic, a reasonable first defensive handgun for a shooter who prefers a revolver, and a practical choice for anyone who would rather have five rounds that always go bang than a magazine that needs maintaining.
