Description
The Taurus 992 Tracker 4in is a nine-shot rimfire revolver that ships with two cylinders — one in .22 LR and one in .22 WMR — on a four-inch barrel, in matte black oxide with an adjustable rear sight and a ribbed rubber grip.
Swapping cylinders takes seconds and no tools, and it turns one revolver into two guns with different jobs. On the .22 LR cylinder the Taurus 992 Tracker 4in is a cheap, quiet all-afternoon plinker; on the .22 WMR cylinder it becomes a small-game and pest revolver with roughly twice the muzzle energy. Four inches is the length that keeps both of those practical without becoming a range-only gun.
What is in the box
- The Taurus 992 Tracker 4in ships with two nine-round cylinders — .22 LR and .22 WMR — both fitted to this frame at the factory.
- A four-inch barrel in matte black oxide, with the whole revolver finished to match.
- An adjustable rear sight, so each cylinder can be zeroed properly. The two cartridges will not shoot to the same point of impact.
- A ribbed black rubber grip that fills the hand, an exposed hammer and a transfer bar safety.
- Nine rounds per cylinder — two more than most .22 revolvers and four more than a centre-fire of the same size.

Getting the most out of two cylinders
- Zero for one cartridge and write down the click count to the other. It saves a box of ammunition every time you switch.
- Four inches is short enough to carry in a field holster and long enough that .22 WMR is still worth chambering — out of a snub it is mostly noise.
- .22 LR stays brand-fussy whatever the barrel length. Buy two or three and settle on what groups.
- Clean the .22 LR chambers properly before switching cylinders. Rimfire fouls heavily and sticky extraction is nearly always dirty chambers.
- The Taurus 992 Tracker 4in handles like the centre-fire Trackers it shares a frame with, which makes it a genuinely useful trainer as well as a field gun.

.22 LR and .22 WMR are both standardised by SAAMI and they are not interchangeable: the Magnum case is longer and wider, which is exactly why this revolver needs a second cylinder rather than just a second box of ammunition. Never attempt to fire .22 WMR in the .22 LR cylinder.
The same revolver with a 6.5-inch barrel is stocked as the 992 Tracker. For a small-frame rimfire, the eight-shot 942 in .22 LR and the 942M in .22 WMR. The centre-fire Tracker in the same layout is the 627 in .357 Magnum.
Why the Taurus 992 Tracker 4in earns its place
- The Taurus 992 Tracker 4in gives two cartridges, two cylinders, one gun — and the swap takes seconds with no tools.
- Nine rounds and adjustable sights, on a barrel length you can carry.
- Cheap to shoot on .22 LR, genuinely capable on .22 WMR.
- No recoil worth mentioning, so it suits a new shooter and an experienced one equally.
- Same frame and handling as the centre-fire Trackers, which makes it a real trainer.
This is a trail, camp and pest revolver, a range gun and one of the better teaching tools money can buy. It suits a household bringing on a new shooter, a farm that needs something for vermin, and anyone who wants rimfire versatility without owning two guns. The Taurus 992 Tracker 4in is not a carry revolver and not a defensive first choice — rimfire ignition is less certain than centre-fire, and that matters when it matters.
