Description

The Taurus 992 Tracker is a nine-shot rimfire revolver that ships with two cylinders — one chambered in .22 LR and one in .22 WMR — on a 6.5-inch vent-rib barrel, in matte stainless throughout, with an adjustable rear sight and a ribbed rubber grip.

Swapping cylinders takes seconds and no tools, and it turns one revolver into two guns with quite different jobs. On the .22 LR cylinder the Taurus 992 Tracker is a cheap, quiet, all-afternoon plinker and a serious target gun. On the .22 WMR cylinder it becomes a small-game and pest revolver with roughly twice the muzzle energy and a much flatter trajectory out of that long barrel.

What comes in the box and how it works

  • The Taurus 992 Tracker ships with two nine-round cylinders, .22 LR and .22 WMR, both fitted to this frame at the factory.
  • A 6.5-inch vent-rib barrel. The rib carries the front sight high and sheds heat; unlike the shorter Trackers, the Taurus 992 Tracker is not ported.
  • An adjustable rear sight, so each cylinder can be zeroed properly — the two cartridges will not shoot to the same point of impact.
  • Matte stainless barrel, cylinder and frame, with a ribbed black rubber grip and a cushioned insert.
  • Exposed hammer, transfer bar safety, and a full-length shrouded ejector rod.

Getting the most out of two cylinders

  • Zero for one cartridge and note where the other lands. The adjustable rear sight lets you move between them, but writing down the click count saves a box of ammunition every time you switch.
  • A 6.5-inch barrel is where .22 WMR starts to make sense. Out of a snub it is mostly noise; out of this it is a genuine hundred-yard small-game cartridge.
  • .22 LR stays fussy about brand whatever the barrel length. Buy two or three and settle on what groups.
  • The Taurus 992 Tracker holds two rounds more than most .22 revolvers and four more than a centre-fire of the same size.
  • Clean the .22 LR chambers properly before switching cylinders — rimfire fouls heavily, and a dirty chamber is the usual cause of sticky extraction.

.22 LR and .22 WMR are both standardised by SAAMI and they are not interchangeable: the Magnum case is longer and wider, which is exactly why this revolver needs a second cylinder rather than just a second box of ammunition. Never attempt to fire .22 WMR in the .22 LR cylinder.

For a rimfire revolver you can actually carry, MAG5 stocks the eight-shot Taurus 942 with a two-inch barrel. If you want the same Tracker layout in a centre-fire cartridge, there is the Tracker 627 in .357 Magnum and the 692 Convertible, which uses the same two-cylinder idea for .357 and 9mm.

Why the Taurus 992 Tracker earns its place

  • The Taurus 992 Tracker gives you two cartridges, two cylinders, one gun — and the swap takes seconds with no tools.
  • Nine rounds, adjustable sights and a 6.5-inch barrel: this is a target revolver as much as a field one.
  • Stainless throughout, for a gun that will live in a range bag and a truck.
  • Cheap to shoot on .22 LR, capable on .22 WMR.
  • No recoil worth mentioning, so it is the rare gun that suits both a new shooter and an experienced one.

This is a range gun, a small-game and pest revolver, and one of the better teaching tools money can buy — a beginner can learn sight alignment and trigger control on it without ever flinching. It also suits an experienced shooter who wants a rimfire that will hold its own on a target line. The Taurus 992 Tracker is not a carry revolver: at 6.5 inches and full weight, it is meant for a holster on a belt in the field or a case in the back of a car.
