Taurus 22TUC 22 LR Purple PVD Tip-Up Pistol 2.5 in. 9+1 – Superb Lightweight Carry Option

Description

The Taurus 22TUC solves a problem most small pistols ignore: racking a slide is difficult for a lot of people, and on a tiny gun it is difficult for almost everyone. The answer here is a barrel that tips up at the press of a lever, so a round goes straight into the chamber by hand and the slide never has to move.

This Taurus 22TUC wears a polished purple PVD slide and tip-up barrel over a black polymer frame. Nine rounds of .22 LR plus one in the chamber, a 2.5-inch barrel, a bright orange front dot and a total weight of about ten ounces.

What the Taurus 22TUC is designed around

• Taurus 22TUC tip-up barrel: press the lever, the barrel swings up, drop a round in. No slide racking required at any point
• 9+1 capacity in .22 LR, which is a lot of rounds for a pistol that weighs ten ounces
• Polished purple PVD on the slide and barrel, a plated finish rather than a paint or a Cerakote
• 2.5-inch barrel in an overall length of about five inches, which is genuinely pocketable
• Fixed orange dot front sight, easy to pick up against almost any background
• Double action only with both a manual safety and a trigger safety
• Black polymer frame with a textured grip surface, keeping the weight where it belongs

Who the tip-up barrel is actually for

• Anyone with arthritis, a hand injury, reduced grip strength or simply small hands, for whom racking a subcompact slide is a real obstacle
• New shooters, because loading and unloading a Taurus 22TUC is visibly obvious rather than a sequence to memorise
• Anyone who wants to clear the chamber without cycling a live round through the ejection port
• The trade is honest: .22 LR is a modest cartridge and this is a small, light gun. Shot placement is everything
• Rimfire ammunition is inconsistent between brands. Test several and find the one that cycles reliably in yours before you trust it
• The double-action-only trigger is long by design. Dry fire practice makes far more difference here than on a striker pistol

.22 Long Rifle is a standardised cartridge with published dimensions and pressures maintained by SAAMI, but within those limits the spread between a bulk-pack round and a premium one is enormous. In a small blowback pistol that spread is the difference between a gun that cycles every time and one that does not, which is why brand testing matters more here than in a revolver.

One thing to be clear about. A ten-ounce .22 is a specialist answer, not a general one. If you can operate a slide and carry a 9mm, a 9mm is the better defensive choice and we will say so. The Taurus 22TUC exists for the people who cannot, or who want something so light they will actually carry it, and for that person it is a far better answer than a gun left at home.

Why this pistol earns its place

• The tip-up barrel removes the single biggest physical barrier to operating a small pistol
• Ten ounces means the Taurus 22TUC gets carried on days when a steel gun stays in the safe
• Nine rounds plus one, which is more than any pocket revolver offers
• Cheap ammunition, so practice is affordable and regular
• Almost no recoil, which keeps follow-up shots fast and makes it pleasant to learn on
• A finish that looks like it was chosen rather than settled for

Shooters with limited hand strength, new owners, anyone who wants the lightest possible carry option, and people buying a first pistol for someone who has been put off by recoil. The Taurus 22TUC is also a genuinely fun range gun, which is not nothing.

The same pistol comes in several finishes. The blue PVD and rose gold PVD are the closest relatives to this one, and the matte black is the plainest.

For something more decorative, look at the engraved blue wave or the cherry blossom. If you would rather have a revolver with no slide at all, the 942 in .22 LR holds eight and needs no loading lever.
