Description

The Holosun HS510C Red Dot is the big open reflex sight that put Holosun on rifles: a 0.91 by 1.26 inch window, a 2 MOA dot inside a 65 MOA circle, solar failsafe, and a titanium hood over the top of it. Part HS510C.

Holosun HS510C Red Dot

The Window Is The Whole Point

The Holosun HS510C Red Dot window is 0.91 by 1.26 inches, a tall window rather than a wide one, and the orientation is deliberate. A rifle optic is used from a consistent cheek weld, so horizontal room matters less than vertical, and vertical room is what lets you find the reticle when your head is not quite where it should be.

That is the practical experience of the Holosun HS510C Red Dot: you bring the rifle up, the dot is already there, and you have not had to hunt for it. On a shotgun or a carbine used at speed, or from a position that is not textbook, a tall window is worth more than any specification on the box.

A Titanium Hood Over The Emitter

The Holosun HS510C Red Dot housing is aluminum with a titanium protective hood, finished in MAO rather than ordinary anodising. That is an unusual combination at this price and it exists for a specific reason.

An open reflex sight like the Holosun HS510C Red Dot has its glass standing up in the air with nothing in front of it. On a rifle that gets slung, dropped, put down on tailgates and shoved through doorways, the lens is the vulnerable part. The titanium hood takes the hit instead. MAO, micro arc oxidation, produces a harder and more corrosion resistant surface than standard anodising, which is what you want on a part designed to be struck.

Half MOA Clicks And Fifty MOA Of Travel

Adjustments on the Holosun HS510C Red Dot move 0.5 MOA per click across 50 MOA of travel in each direction. Half MOA clicks are finer than the category standard, which means at a hundred yards each click shifts impact half an inch and you can walk a group onto the bull rather than watch it hop across it.

Fifty MOA of range in each direction is generous enough for any sane mount, including the taller ones people use to get a co witness on an AR. Between the two you get a sight you can genuinely zero rather than approximately zero, which matters because a 2 MOA dot is fine enough to show you your errors.

The 65 MOA Circle On A Long Gun

The 2 MOA dot inside a 65 MOA ring on the Holosun HS510C Red Dot is the classic rifle arrangement, and the ring is doing two jobs. Up close it is the thing your eye catches instantly, so a shotgun or a carbine used at contact distance points fast without you consciously aiming.

At distance it measures. Sixty five MOA subtends about sixty eight inches at a hundred yards, so a target of known size filling a known fraction of the ring tells you roughly how far away it is. You can also run the Holosun HS510C Red Dot as a bare 2 MOA dot or a bare circle; all three come from the same emitter so nothing needs re-zeroing when you switch.

Solar Failsafe And Quick Detach

A solar panel on top of the Holosun HS510C Red Dot harvests ambient light and keeps the sight running if the CR2032 dies or is removed. The cell is rated at 50,000 hours at brightness setting six, and Shake Awake sleeps the optic when the rifle is still, so the practical runtime is far longer than continuous use would suggest.

The mount is a quick detach Picatinny clamp, so the Holosun HS510C Red Dot comes off and goes back on without tools when you want to clean under it or swap it between guns. Ten daylight brightness settings and two night vision settings cover a bright range through to passive aiming.

One Honest Note On Weight

The Holosun HS510C Red Dot weighs 4.94 ounces and measures 3.3 by 1.68 by 1.78 inches. That is substantial for a red dot and it is the cost of the big window and the titanium hood. On an AR or a defensive shotgun it disappears. On a lightweight bird gun or a minimalist build where every ounce has been argued over, it will not, and a smaller enclosed sight would serve you better. We would rather say that now than after it arrives.
