Description

The CZ 75 P-01 is the gun CZ built when a police service asked for a CZ 75 that could be carried all day. The full-size 75 is a steel pistol and feels like one. The P-01 keeps the slide-inside-frame layout, the trigger and the grip angle that made the 75 famous, then hangs it on a forged aluminum frame and cuts the barrel to 3.75 inches.

Look closely at the slide on the photographs and you will see a NATO stock number roll-marked into it. That is not marketing. This design went through a formal certification process and came out the other side with an inventory number, which is a level of scrutiny almost nothing in this price bracket has been through.

What you get in the hand is a forged alloy frame compact 9mm that weighs about 28 ounces, points where you are looking, and has one of the better double-action-to-single-action trigger arrangements ever fitted to a service pistol.

Why the CZ 75 P-01 slide sits inside the frame

  • The CZ 75 layout runs the slide on rails inside the frame rather than outside it, which lowers the bore axis and keeps the muzzle flatter under recoil.
  • It also leaves very little slide to grip, which is the honest trade and takes some getting used to if you have come from a Glock or an M&P.
  • A decocking lever pistol drops the hammer safely to half cock without touching the trigger, so the first shot is a deliberate double action rather than a cocked single action.
  • A firing pin block and a safety stop on the hammer mean the gun is drop-safe with a round chambered.
  • The frame is forged aluminum with a black polycoat finish, a beavertail and an accessory rail molded in.

The details that matter in the hand

  • Cold hammer forged barrel, which is the expensive way to make one and shows up in barrel life rather than in a spec sheet.
  • Black steel slide with front and rear serrations.
  • Rubber grip panels, which suit a carry gun better than the aggressive checkering on the competition models.
  • Fixed sights, sensibly regulated and not fussy.
  • Accessory rail under the dust cover for a light.
  • Two magazines in the box.

One number worth checking before you buy

Magazine capacity for the P-01 is published two ways and we would rather flag it than quietly pick one. Sports South lists this SKU as 15+1 and Zanders names it as a 15-round magazine pistol. A number of retail listings and older CZ literature give 14+1, which was the original specification before the magazine was revised.

Our own CZ 75 Compact magazine is a 15-rounder and fits this frame, and the P-01 50th Anniversary Elite is explicitly a 15-round gun. The weight of evidence is 15, and we have listed it that way. If the exact count matters to you, ask us before you order and we will open a box and look.

Living with a double action first shot

A CZ 75 P-01 fires the first shot double action, with a long deliberate pull, and every shot after it single action, short and light. That is a feature rather than a quirk: it puts a real mechanical hurdle in front of an unintended first shot while leaving the follow-ups crisp.

It does demand practice. A shooter who has only ever run a striker-fired pistol will pull the first shot low and left until they learn to press through the long stroke without disturbing the sights. Dry practice fixes it faster than live fire does, and the decocker means you can repeat the first-shot press as many times as you like without racking the slide.

Honest limits of the CZ 75 P-01

The CZ 75 P-01 slide is narrow and there is not much of it standing proud of the frame, so it is harder to grip for a press check or a malfunction clearance than a conventional pistol, particularly with wet or cold hands. Aftermarket slide racker plates exist for exactly this reason.

It is also not optics ready. There is no cut in this slide, and having one milled is a gunsmith job rather than a plate purchase. If a red dot is on your list, look at the CZ P-10 C Optic Ready instead, which is the same size class with a factory cut and a polymer frame.

Why the CZ 75 P-01 earns its place

  • A forged alloy frame gives you steel-gun handling at a weight you can actually carry.
  • The low bore axis is not a marketing line, it is a consequence of the layout, and it shows on the second shot.
  • A cold hammer forged barrel is a genuine quality item that rarely appears at this price.
  • Decocker, firing pin block and a hammer safety stop mean it is safe to carry hammer-down with a round chambered.
  • It carries a NATO stock number on the slide, which is a harder test than most guns in this bracket have faced.

Within the CZ range the obvious step across is the P-01 50th Anniversary Elite, which is this pistol with the dress uniform on. If you want the full-size steel gun instead, the SP-01 with the 4.6 in. barrel is the heavier, softer-shooting version, and the Shadow 2 Carry takes the competition gun and makes it wearable.

For a polymer-framed striker pistol with a factory optic cut, the P-10 C Optic Ready is the modern answer, and the P-09 Compact Nocturne sits between the two.
