Nocturne is CZ’s word for taking a gun that already works and removing everything shiny from it. The CZ P-09 Compact Nocturne is the compact P-09 in black on black: black steel barrel, black serrated slide with a factory optic cut, black polymer frame, black controls. Nothing on it reflects light back at you.

Underneath the finish it is a CZ, which is the part that matters. Fifteen rounds of 9mm in a 3.74 inch pistol, an Omega double-action/single-action trigger, an ambidextrous safety, a Picatinny rail and two magazines in the box.

Why the CZ P-09 Compact Nocturne earns its place

• Two magazines and interchangeable backstraps as standard, which is a real saving before you have fired a shot.
• Fifteen rounds in a compact frame, which is more than most pistols this size manage.
• A hammer-fired action in a market that has gone almost entirely striker-fired. If you prefer a decocking hammer gun and a genuine double-action first shot, the options are shrinking and this is one of them.
• The blacked-out treatment is not only cosmetic. Nothing on the CZ P-09 Compact Nocturne catches light at the wrong moment.

Being straight about the compromises of the CZ P-09 Compact Nocturne. The distributor record lists the optic cut as a Shield RMS / Holosun K pattern, which means small-footprint optics. Do not buy a full-size RMR for this pistol; buy something like the Holosun HS507K X2, which is the right size for the cut. Note also that Zanders’ own structured field calls the cut proprietary while its feature text names the Shield/Holosun K pattern, so if you already own a dot, send us the model and we will confirm before you order rather than after.

It is also a big compact. At 26.1 oz with a 3.74 inch barrel and a full fifteen-round grip, the CZ P-09 Compact Nocturne conceals like a duty gun that has had its slide shortened, because that is what it is. If you want something that disappears under a shirt, this is not it. If you want a house gun, a truck gun or a duty-style pistol you can also carry under a jacket, it is very good.

Double action first shot is a skill. A DA/SA pistol asks you to manage two different trigger pulls, and people who shoot one badly usually have not put the rounds in to learn it. Budget the practice ammunition: Federal American Eagle 115gr FMJ for volume, Hornady Critical Defense for the magazine you keep loaded. Spare magazines are the factory CZ 15-round.
