Description
The Barrett M82A1 50 BMG FDE is the Flat Dark Earth version of Barrett’s original semi automatic 50, fitted with the full length 29 inch fluted barrel. Mechanically it is identical to the black gun: a short recoil operated action, a ten round magazine, a 1:15 twist and the same 23 inch rail. The difference is the finish, and on a rifle this size the finish is not a small thing. Flat Dark Earth does something practical as well as cosmetic.
A 57 inch black rifle lying prone in dry grass is a very obvious object; the same rifle in FDE simply is not. For anyone shooting in open country rather than on a covered firing line, that is a real argument for the colour.
What Defines the Barrett M82A1 50 BMG FDE
The 29 inch fluted barrel is the length the 50 BMG cartridge was developed around, and it is where the round produces the velocity its ballistics assume. Fluting takes weight off without costing much stiffness, and the rifle still comes in at 32.7 pounds and 57 inches overall.
The action is short recoil operated. Barrel and bolt travel rearward together before unlocking, which stretches the recoil impulse out over time rather than delivering it in one hit. With the muzzle brake and the rifle’s mass, the felt recoil is a long push, and most shooters find it milder than a heavy magnum hunting rifle.
Quick adjust flip up iron sights are fitted, and the 23 inch M1913 rail carries 27 MOA of built in cant along with a carrying handle. A quick detach adjustable bipod and a rear grip that accepts a monopod are included, so the rifle is genuinely complete out of the box.
Finish Care, Blast and Legal Notes
Cerakote in Flat Dark Earth wears the way any coating wears. Contact points on the bipod legs, the magazine well and the handguard will burnish over time, and on a light colour that shows more readily than it does on black. Most owners consider that character; it is worth knowing before you buy if you do not.
Muzzle blast is severe. The brake works, but it redirects an enormous amount of gas sideways, which is why many public ranges either prohibit 50 BMG or restrict it to a dedicated bay. Call ahead, and plan on doubled hearing protection for anyone within a few positions of you.
Barrett is explicit that the Model 82A1 does not ship with a suppressor capable brake and will not take large calibre suppressors. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items in any case. Separately, 50 BMG rifles are prohibited in California and restricted in some municipalities, so confirm your own law before ordering.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett M82A1 50 BMG FDE
50 BMG came to civilian shooters from the military rather than the other way round, and the ammunition market still reflects that. Match grade loads are made by a handful of manufacturers and priced per round; surplus and steel case is cheaper and noticeably less consistent. In a rifle of this quality the ammunition is usually the accuracy limit rather than the barrel. Commercial cartridge standards are published by SAAMI.
Plan for the size. At 57 inches and nearly 33 pounds this rifle does not fit a normal case, a normal safe shelf or a normal range bag. The barrel comes off for transport, which helps a great deal, and the factory case is worth keeping for exactly that reason.
The same rifle is listed in black with the 29 inch barrel and in a shorter 20 inch configuration if portability matters more than velocity.
