Description
The Barrett M82A1 50 BMG 29in is the rifle that created the category. Ronnie Barrett designed the original in the early 1980s, the military adopted it, and forty odd years later it is still in production essentially unchanged in concept: a recoil operated, semi automatic 50 calibre rifle that a person can carry and shoot from a bipod. This is the standard black configuration with the 29 inch fluted barrel, a 1:15 twist and a ten round magazine.
Fluting sheds weight without giving up much stiffness, and the long barrel is what lets the 50 BMG reach the velocities the cartridge was designed around. It weighs 32.7 pounds and measures 57 inches overall, and neither of those numbers is a misprint.
How the Barrett M82A1 50 BMG 29in Actually Shoots
The short barrel recoil action is the whole trick. The barrel and bolt move rearward together before unlocking, which spreads the recoil impulse over time instead of delivering it all at once. Combined with 32 pounds of rifle and a very effective muzzle brake, the result is a 50 BMG that pushes rather than punishes, and most shooters describe it as milder than a heavy magnum hunting rifle.
What the brake does not do is make the rifle pleasant for anyone nearby. Blast is severe and travels sideways, which is why many public ranges either prohibit 50 BMG or confine it to a dedicated bay. Call the range before you load the rifle into the truck.
The rifle ships with a quick detach adjustable bipod, a rear hand grip that accepts an adjustable monopod, and a carrying handle on the rail. Quick adjust flip up iron sights are fitted, so it is usable without glass, which is unusual at this end of the market.
Optics, Suppressors and Honest Caveats
The 23 inch M1913 rail carries 27 MOA of built in cant. That is a great deal more than a conventional rifle and it exists because 50 BMG is used where an ordinary scope simply runs out of elevation. Choose an optic with the internal travel to use it, and rings rated for the impulse of a recoil operated rifle this heavy.
Barrett is explicit that the Model 82A1 does not ship with a suppressor capable muzzle brake and will not accept large calibre suppressors. If suppressed shooting is the plan, the M107A1 is the platform that takes the Barrett QDL. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items in any case, and a suppressor would require ATF approval and its own transfer.
Two practical costs. Ammunition is measured in dollars per round rather than cents, so casual plinking is not realistic. And 50 BMG rifles are prohibited in California and restricted in some municipalities, so confirm your own state and local law before ordering.

- A 27 MOA rail with the elevation to reach where this cartridge is used
Who it suits
This suits the shooter who wants the definitive semi automatic 50 and has the range access and the budget to use it. It is not a hunting rifle, it is not subtle, and it is not cheap to feed. What it is, is the most recognisable rifle Barrett has ever built and one that still does the job it was designed for.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett M82A1 50 BMG 29in
50 BMG reached civilian shooters from the military rather than the other way round, and its supply reflects that. Match grade loads come from a handful of manufacturers and are priced per round; surplus and steel case ammunition is far cheaper and far less consistent, and in a rifle like this the ammunition is almost always the accuracy limit rather than the barrel. Commercial cartridge standards are published by SAAMI.
Think about storage and transport before the rifle arrives. At 57 inches and 32.7 pounds it does not fit a normal rifle case, a normal safe shelf or a normal range bag, and the factory case is worth keeping for that reason alone. The barrel is user removable for transport, which helps more than it sounds.
If you want the same cartridge in the lighter, suppressor capable platform, our M107A1 America 250 is the newer design, and the M82A1 America 250 is the numbered commemorative version of this exact rifle.
