Description
The Barrett M82A1 50 BMG 20in is the short barrel version of the rifle that started the civilian 50 calibre category. Everything about the design is the same as the 29 inch gun, from the recoil operated semi automatic action to the flip up iron sights and the carrying handle. What changes is the balance: nine inches shorter, a little over a pound lighter, and considerably easier to move and store.
Barrett lists it at 48 inches overall and 31.4 pounds with the 20 inch barrel, against 57 inches and 32.7 pounds for the long version. That sounds marginal on paper and is not marginal in practice. A 57 inch rifle is awkward in a vehicle and impossible in a standard case; 48 inches is merely large.
What You Give Up and What You Gain on the 20 Inch Barrel
You lose velocity, and there is no getting around it. A 50 BMG load developed around a 29 inch barrel will leave a 20 inch tube slower, which costs you retained energy and pushes the transonic transition closer. For shooting inside a thousand yards that matters very little. For genuine extreme range work the long barrel is the better tool.
What you gain is a rifle you will actually take places. Nine inches off the overall length is the difference between a rifle that fits a truck and one that does not, and the shorter barrel makes the whole package noticeably less unwieldy to carry to a firing point.
Muzzle blast increases with a shorter barrel, and on a 50 this is not a subtle effect. The brake is already aggressive, and moving the muzzle nine inches closer to the shooter makes it louder for everyone on the line. Doubled hearing protection is the sensible default.
Sights, Rail and Ammunition Notes
The rifle ships with quick adjust flip up iron sights, a 23 inch M1913 rail with 27 MOA of built in cant and a carrying handle, plus a quick detach adjustable bipod and a rear grip that takes a monopod. It is unusually complete out of the box for a rifle at this price.
That 27 MOA of rail cant is worth understanding. It exists so that a scope with generous internal elevation still has adjustment left at long range, and it is far more cant than a conventional rifle carries. Pair it with an optic that can use it and with rings rated for a recoil operated rifle of this mass.
Barrett states plainly that the Model 82A1 does not come with a suppressor capable brake and will not accept large calibre suppressors. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items regardless, and a suppressor would require ATF approval, a tax stamp and its own transfer. If suppressed 50 is the goal, the M107A1 is the platform that supports it.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett M82A1 50 BMG 20in
50 BMG is a military cartridge that reached civilian shooters, and the supply picture reflects that. Match grade loads come from a small number of makers and are priced per round rather than per box, while surplus and steel case ammunition is cheaper and much less consistent. Expect the ammunition to be the accuracy limit before the rifle is. Commercial cartridge standards are published by SAAMI.
Check local law before ordering. 50 BMG rifles are prohibited in California and restricted in some municipalities, and a good many public ranges either ban the cartridge or restrict it to a dedicated bay because of the blast. One phone call to your range saves a wasted trip with a 31 pound rifle.
If you want the extra velocity, we also list the M82A1 with the 29 inch barrel, and the M107A1 America 250 is the lighter, suppressor capable platform.
