If you want an AR-15 for home defense, a 16-inch 5.56 AR-15 rifle is the most practical place to start. Magazines, ammunition, optics, and parts are everywhere, and a carbine-length rifle is easy to handle indoors. A white light and a sling matter more than a fancier trigger.

Chamber
A 5.56 NATO or .223 Wylde chamber safely fires both 5.56 and .223 ammunition. A rifle marked .223 Remington only should not be fed 5.56.
Bolt carrier group
Look for a properly staked gas key and a bolt that was tested at the factory. The BCG is the heart of the rifle, and it’s where cheap builds cut corners first.
Barrel
Chrome-lined or nitrided barrels resist wear and corrosion. A 1:7 or 1:8 twist handles the widest range of bullet weights.
Handguard
A free-float M-LOK handguard makes it easy to mount a light and improves accuracy. A fixed front sight is simpler but limits what you can add.

What’s the difference between 5.56 and .223?
5.56 NATO runs at higher pressure than .223 Remington. A 5.56 or .223 Wylde chamber handles both. A .223-only chamber should stick to .223.
Do I have to buy in person?
No. We ship to your local FFL anywhere we’re able. If you’re near Collegeville, pick up here by appointment. The ATF governs how every transfer through a licensed dealer works.
What should I budget beyond the rifle?
Plan on an optic, a white light, a sling, a few extra magazines, and 500 rounds of practice ammo. Those often add up to half the price of the rifle.
