Great Lakes AR-15 223 Wylde Charcoal Overview
Charcoal Green is a dark, desaturated green-gray that looks at home on a hunting rifle as much as on a range carbine. Great Lakes applies it to 7075 aluminum receivers and a 15.25-inch 6061 aluminum handguard with full-length Picatinny rail. The 16-inch heavy barrel is nitride-treated 4150 chrome-moly-vanadium steel with a 1:8 twist, threaded 1/2×28 and fitted with a brake. A carbine gas system with a .750 block, M4 feed ramps, a mil-spec trigger and a collapsible stock round out a familiar, serviceable layout at about 6.8 pounds and 33.25 inches.
A Practical Color
Charcoal Green blends into woodland and field edges far better than black or bright Cerakote colors, which makes the rifle a sensible choice for groundhog, coyote and fox hunting. It also hides dust and fingerprints well. Cerakote protects against corrosion and solvents, though, like any coating, it will wear on sharp edges with years of use.
Durable Barrel for High Round Counts
Nitride treatment hardens the barrel steel inside and out, giving long wear life and strong corrosion resistance at a sensible price. If you plan to take a carbine class or run several hundred rounds in a weekend, nitride handles the heat and abrasion well. The 1:8 twist stabilizes bullets from 55 to 77 grains.
Feeding It
The 223 Wylde chamber accepts .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO safely, so you can use inexpensive bulk ammunition for practice and better loads for varmints or zeroing. Use quality magazines; the rifle takes any standard AR-15 magazine, and the included 30-round magazine is a good starting point.
Optics and Setup
No sights are included. For varmint work, a 3-9x or 4-12x scope gives enough magnification for smaller targets, while a red dot or 1-6x suits general use. The full-length top rail and long handguard leave room for a bipod adapter, light and sling mounts.
What to Know
Great Lakes is a smaller manufacturer, so resale value trails the biggest AR brands, though parts are standard. The brake reduces recoil but increases side blast for shooters next to you. The mil-spec trigger is serviceable rather than crisp, and many owners upgrade it.
