Description
The LCP MAX took a pocket pistol that held six and made it hold ten, without making it meaningfully bigger. This version adds the one thing the standard gun does not have: a frame-mounted manual safety.
The Ruger LCP MAX Manual Safety is the same 10.6 ounce, 2.8 inch, ten-round 380 as the rest of the line, with a tritium front sight and a thumb safety above the trigger. If you were trained on a safety, or you carry in a pocket and want a mechanical block as well as a good holster, this is the variant to buy.
What the Ruger LCP MAX Manual Safety gives you
- 10+1 rounds of 380 ACP in a gun that weighs 10.6 ounces empty.
- A manual safety on the frame. Not ambidextrous — it is a right-hand-side thumb control.
- Night sights. The distributor record lists a tritium front sight, which on a pocket gun is the sight that matters, because the front is what your eye goes to.
- A 2.80 inch black oxide alloy steel barrel and a black nitride serrated slide.
- A textured polymer frame that fills the hand better than the old LCP ever did.

One magazine, and why that matters
- One magazine ships in the box. Buy a spare before your first range trip, not after.
- A 12-round ProMag LCP MAX magazine is the cheap way to get a second and a third.
- The flush ten-round magazine is what keeps the gun pocketable; an extended magazine buys you grip and costs you the pocket.

Why the Ruger LCP MAX Manual Safety earns its place
- Ten rounds in a genuine pocket gun. That was not an option a few years ago at any price.
- The tritium front sight is the single most useful upgrade a small carry pistol can have, and here it is standard rather than an extra.
- A manual safety is the difference between carrying and not carrying for a lot of people, and Ruger sells the LCP MAX both ways rather than deciding for you.
- 10.6 ounces means it goes in a pocket and stays there. A gun you leave in a drawer because it is heavy protects nobody.
- Ruger’s service reputation is worth something on a gun you intend to keep for twenty years.
The honest part. A 10.6 ounce pistol firing 380 ACP recoils sharply. Physics does not care how well the grip is textured; light guns move. It is manageable, it is not painful, and it is nothing like shooting a full-size 9mm. But it is unpleasant enough that most owners do not practice with it as much as they should, and a Ruger LCP MAX Manual Safety you cannot shoot well is worse than a bigger gun you can.
So buy practice ammunition with the Ruger LCP MAX Manual Safety. Federal 380 ACP 95gr FMJ is the range load; Underwood 380 +P Xtreme Defender is the defensive option if you want more than a standard-pressure hollow point. Shoot at least a box of whatever you intend to carry through the gun before you trust it, because small 380s are fussier about bullet profile than anything full-size.
Be honest about the safety on a Ruger LCP MAX Manual Safety. A manual safety you have not trained is worse than no safety at all. If you buy this variant, practice sweeping it off as part of your firing grip, every time, until it is not a separate step. If that sounds like work you will not do, buy the LCP MAX without the safety instead and use a rigid holster that covers the trigger guard completely.
And 380 ACP has less margin than 9mm. Modern defensive loads have closed much of the gap but not all of it, and shot placement matters more. That is the trade you make for a gun this size, and it is a reasonable one — just make it knowingly.
