How a Fluted Solid Beats a 380 Hollow Point
Lehigh Defense designed the Xtreme Defender as a solid copper bullet with deep radial flutes machined into the nose. It does not expand, deform or shed weight. Instead the flutes force tissue outward at high pressure as the bullet passes, creating a permanent wound cavity substantially wider than the bullet diameter while the projectile itself keeps its full mass and drives straight.
That mechanism solves the specific problem the 380 ACP has. A conventional hollow point in this cartridge is working at the edge of its velocity envelope: through heavy clothing it often fails to open, and when it does open it frequently stops short of the FBI 12 inch penetration standard. The Underwood 380 ACP +P 68gr Xtreme Defender produces its wound channel by fluid displacement rather than expansion, so clothing and intermediate barriers do not defeat it.
Underwood loads this at 1400 feet per second for roughly 296 foot-pounds, which is genuinely brisk for a 380. The Platinum Edition designation refers to the nickel-plated cases, which resist corrosion in a pocket or a purse and feed a touch more smoothly in tight blowback actions.

The 68 grain weight is unusually light for the cartridge, and that is deliberate. A shorter, lighter monolithic gets to higher velocity, and the flute mechanism scales with velocity rather than with mass. Recoil in a small blowback 380 is noticeably sharper than with a 95 grain FMJ, which is worth knowing before you buy several boxes.
Because the bullet is solid copper it is lead free, and it holds together against bone or a barrier. Penetration in gel typically runs well into the 12 to 18 inch band that the FBI protocol looks for, which is more than most 380 hollow points manage.
One practical note on the +P designation: 380 ACP +P is not a SAAMI-standardized pressure. Underwood loads it to what their testing supports, and most modern 380 pistols handle it, but older or very small blowback designs may not be rated for it. Buy the Underwood 380 ACP +P 68gr Xtreme Defender if you carry a 380 and want the most reliable terminal performance the cartridge can produce. This is the load for someone who has read the gel test data and concluded that 380 hollow points are a compromise.
Skip it for practice. At this price a box of twenty is carry ammunition, not range ammunition. Buy a bulk 95 grain FMJ to train with and keep this for the magazine you actually carry.
Skip it if your pistol is not rated for +P, or if it is an older blowback design. The standard-pressure Xtreme Defender in the same bullet weight is the correct choice there, and it works on the same principle.
