Description

The Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol in 12 gauge, part number J32CF11, is the Frog Skin build of the defensive A300. The pattern runs over the whole gun, barrel and receiver included, rather than being applied to the stock alone. The barrel is 19.10 inches and chrome lined, capacity is seven plus one, the forend carries M-LOK slots, the aluminium receiver has a Picatinny rail, and an Improved Cylinder choke ships with the gun. Frog Skin is the Second World War era duck hunter pattern, soft brown and green blotches on tan.

It is an older and more organic looking camouflage than the digital and blocky patterns that followed it.

Chrome lined barrel, and why it matters here

A chrome lined bore resists corrosion far better than a blued one, which matters most on a gun that will sit loaded and untouched for long stretches rather than being cleaned after every outing.

It also releases plastic wad fouling more easily, so the bore stays clean longer between the cleanings a defensive gun actually gets.

This is a choke threaded barrel rather than a fixed cylinder bore, and the Improved Cylinder tube supplied with it is a sensible middle setting for buckshot.

Nineteen point one inches keeps the gun handy indoors while leaving room for a seven round magazine tube.

What the M-LOK forend and the rail change

M-LOK slots take a light directly. On a defensive shotgun a light matters more than any other accessory, and a clamp on the magazine tube is always a compromise.

The receiver rail takes a red dot without a gunsmith. On a shotgun a dot is genuinely quicker than a bead for anyone who has not put in the hours on bead sighting.

The gas action bleeds off part of the shot’s energy to work the bolt, and what it bleeds off does not reach your shoulder. Against a pump that is obvious by the third round.

Seven plus one means the magazine tube runs nearly to the muzzle, so the gun is as compact as that capacity allows.

Shotshell dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI, and the 3 inch chamber accepts both 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. Because the barrel is 19.10 inches and the stock is fixed, this is an ordinary shotgun under federal law and needs no special paperwork. For defensive use we stock nine pellet 00 buckshot, and 2 3/4 inch target loads are the inexpensive way to practise; reduced recoil and mini shells are a poor match for a gas gun.

The other camouflaged build is the Multicam Black Patrol, the plain finished guns are the black Patrol and the gray Patrol, and the pistol grip builds are the 7+1 and 5+1 chisel stock versions. Every long gun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer.

Why it is worth considering

  • A chrome lined bore, which suits a gun that sits loaded more than it gets cleaned.
  • Frog Skin over the whole gun rather than a stock wrap.
  • M-LOK on the forend, so a light mounts without a barrel clamp.
  • A receiver rail for a red dot, fitted at the factory.
  • An Improved Cylinder choke supplied, so the barrel is threaded rather than fixed.

Who it suits

This suits a buyer who wants a defensive shotgun that is soft to shoot, easy to set up with a light and a dot, and who likes the older pattern. Hunters should look at the A300 Ultima field guns instead. Every long gun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer.
