The Barrett Model 99 416 FDE is the Flat Dark Earth version of Barrett’s single shot precision rifle, chambered in 416 Barrett with the 32 inch heavy barrel. The Model 99 exists for one reason: to shoot smaller groups than a magazine fed semi automatic can, and it gets there by removing everything that moves. There is no magazine, no gas system and no recoil operated barrel travel. One round is loaded by hand, the bolt is closed on a fixed breech, and the only thing that moves when the trigger breaks is the bullet.

That is a very old idea and it still works. The rifle weighs 25 pounds and measures 50 inches overall.

What the Barrett Model 99 416 FDE Does Differently

Rigidity is the whole argument. A single shot receiver only has to lock a barrel and contain pressure, so it can be built stiffer than an action that also has to cycle. That is why the Model 99 has the accuracy reputation it does among the large bore rifles.

It is also far lighter than the semi automatic Barretts. Twenty five pounds against nearly thirty three for a Model 82A1 is genuinely noticeable when the rifle has to be carried, and at 50 inches it stores and transports more easily than a 57 inch rifle.

The Flat Dark Earth Cerakote is the practical choice for open country. A rifle this size in black is an extremely obvious object on dry ground; in FDE it simply is not. Expect the coating to burnish at the bipod feet and contact points over time, which shows more on a light finish than a dark one.

416 Barrett, Optics and the Single Shot Trade

416 Barrett is a 50 BMG case necked down to .416, sending a long, high ballistic coefficient solid out fast enough to stay supersonic well past where standard 50 BMG ball has given up. It also recoils less. The catch is that it is a proprietary cartridge with a small number of sources, more expensive and harder to find than 50 BMG, and that is worth sorting out before the rifle arrives rather than after.

The rail is 13.75 inches with 27 MOA of built in cant, shorter than the rail on the semi automatic rifles. Measure your eye relief before committing to a mount, because there is less room to slide a scope fore and aft. The cant is there so an optic with generous elevation still has travel left at long range.

The single shot action is the honest limitation. Every shot means lifting the bolt, extracting the case by hand and feeding a fresh round. For deliberate long range shooting that costs nothing at all. For anything requiring a fast second shot, this is the wrong rifle and the M82A1 is the right one.

416 Barrett is proprietary rather than a widely adopted standard, and that is the practical constraint on owning this rifle. Barrett loads it, a handful of specialist makers load it, and brass is available to handloaders willing to develop their own. You will not find it at a sporting goods counter, and the cost per shot is high even measured against other large bore cartridges. Blast from the three port brake is severe and directed sideways. Many ranges restrict large bore rifles to a dedicated bay for exactly that reason, so a phone call before you drive out with a 25 pound rifle is worth making. Doubled hearing protection is the sensible default for anyone within a few firing positions.
