Description
The Barrett Model 99 416 Barrett is the accuracy specialist in Barrett’s line, and it gets there by leaving things out. There is no magazine, no gas system and no recoil operated barrel travel. It is a single shot bolt action built around a 32 inch heavy barrel, and every design decision serves the group size rather than the rate of fire. This is the black version chambered in 416 Barrett, the cartridge Barrett developed specifically to beat the 50 BMG at distance with a lighter, sleeker bullet.
The 1:12 twist barrel and the fixed breech are a natural pairing for it, and the rifle weighs 25 pounds and measures 50 inches overall.
Why a Single Shot Barrett Model 99 416 Barrett Makes Sense
A single shot action is inherently more rigid than a magazine fed semi automatic. Nothing cycles, nothing moves under recoil except the bullet, and the barrel is locked into a receiver that only has to do one job. That is the entire argument for the Model 99, and it is why this rifle has a reputation for accuracy the semi automatics do not match.
It is also dramatically lighter than the semi automatic 50s. Twenty five pounds against nearly thirty three for a Model 82A1 is a meaningful difference when the rifle has to be carried from the truck to a firing point, and the 50 inch overall length is easier to store and transport.
The trade is obvious and worth stating plainly. One round at a time, loaded by hand, with the bolt lifted and the case extracted between every shot. For deliberate long range work that costs nothing. If you want follow up shots in a hurry, this is the wrong rifle.
416 Barrett and What the Rifle Comes With
416 Barrett was designed as a 50 BMG case necked down to .416, throwing a long, high ballistic coefficient solid at very high velocity. It stays supersonic considerably further than standard 50 BMG ball and it recoils less. The catch is supply: this is a proprietary cartridge with a handful of sources, and it is more expensive and harder to find than 50 BMG. Sort that out before the rifle arrives.
The rifle carries a 13.75 inch rail with 27 MOA of built in cant, a three port high efficiency muzzle brake and a match quality trigger. The rear hand grip accepts an adjustable monopod. The rail is shorter than the one on the semi automatic rifles, so plan your scope mounting with that in mind.
The brake is effective and it is loud. Blast on a 25 pound rifle in this calibre is severe and directed sideways, which is why plenty of ranges restrict large bore rifles to a dedicated bay. A phone call before you go is worth making.

Who it suits
This suits the deliberate long range shooter who cares about group size rather than follow up shots, and who is willing to source a proprietary cartridge. It is the Barrett to buy if accuracy is the point. It is the wrong Barrett if you want the iconic semi automatic experience.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett Model 99 416 Barrett
416 Barrett is a proprietary cartridge rather than a widely adopted standard, and that is the practical constraint on owning this rifle. Barrett loads it, a small number of specialist makers load it, and brass is available to handloaders who want to work up their own. It is not a round you will find at a sporting goods counter, and the cost per shot is high even by large bore standards. Commercial cartridge standards for other calibres are published by SAAMI.
Optics deserve thought because the rail is only 13.75 inches. There is less room to slide a scope fore and aft than on the semi automatic rifles, so measure your eye relief before committing to a mount. The 27 MOA of built in cant is there so a scope with generous elevation still has travel left at distance; pick an optic that can use it.
The same rifle is listed in Flat Dark Earth if you prefer it, and if you would rather have the semi automatic platform our M82A1 in 50 BMG is the alternative.
