Description

Winchester Varmint X 223 Rem 55gr is built for one job: putting predators and varmints down fast without a long tracking job. Winchester catalogues it as X223PXP, a 55 grain Extreme Point polymer tipped bullet leaving the muzzle at 3240 fps for 1282 ft-lbs. Twenty rounds to the box, brass cased, boxer primed and reloadable, loaded in the United States.

What the Extreme Point Bullet Does
The Extreme Point tip is oversized compared with most polymer tips, and that is deliberate. A larger tip drives back into the bullet nose harder on impact, which starts expansion sooner and transfers energy faster. Combined with a thin alloy jacket and a soft lead core, the bullet is designed to come apart rather than pass through, which is exactly what you want on a coyote or a groundhog.
That fragmenting behaviour is also the safety argument for this polymer tipped varmint bullet. A bullet that disintegrates on impact carries far less ricochet risk than a full metal jacket, which matters when you are shooting across pasture or near buildings. It is a large part of why dedicated varmint loads exist rather than everyone just using FMJ.
At 3240 fps this 223 Remington varmint ammo shoots flat enough that most people can hold dead on out to about 250 yards with a 200 yard zero. Past that the light 55 grain bullet starts giving ground to wind, and that, rather than energy, is what limits its practical range.
Winchester Varmint X 223 Rem 55gr Specifications
Winchester loads this to standard .223 Remington pressure, so it is safe in both .223 and 5.56 NATO chambers. The 55 grain bullet stabilises in any common twist rate, including the slow 1-12 barrels found on older varmint rifles.

Honest Notes on This Load
This is not a deer bullet and should never be used as one. The whole design intent of Winchester Varmint X 223 Rem 55gr is rapid fragmentation, which produces a shallow, violent wound rather than the penetration a deer sized animal requires. Most states prohibit .22 centerfire for deer anyway, and where it is legal this particular bullet is still the wrong choice.
Fragmenting bullets and steel targets do not mix at close range. At 3240 fps a thin jacketed bullet coming apart on an AR500 plate throws material back further than people expect. Keep a minimum of 100 yards between muzzle and steel, and use properly rated plate.
Wind, not energy, sets your limit. A 55 grain bullet has a low ballistic coefficient and drifts noticeably past 250 yards. If you regularly shoot prairie dogs at 300 plus, a heavier bullet in a faster twist barrel will frustrate you less, and that means a different rifle rather than a different box of ammunition.
Finally, on cost and practice. This is a hunting load and priced accordingly. Confirm your zero with a box, then practise with cheaper 55 grain FMJ, which shoots to a similar point of impact at normal varmint distances. Keep the Varmint X for the field.
For high volume practice we stock Federal 223 Rem 55 grain FMJ in 500 round packs, and the Underwood 62 grain Controlled Chaos is the premium alternative. Full product data is on the Winchester Varmint X product page.
Winchester Varmint X 223 Rem 55gr suits coyote callers, groundhog and prairie dog shooters, and anyone running a .223 or 5.56 rifle for pest control. MAG5 Firearms is a family owned FFL in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Boxes ship where state and local law allows.
