What a 45 Grain JHP Is Good For
Forty five grains is light for a .224 bullet and the consequence is speed. At 3550 fps this is one of the fastest factory .223 loads available, and that velocity flattens trajectory usefully inside 250 yards. Combined with a jacketed hollow point that opens quickly, it makes a genuinely effective varmint and predator load rather than a plinking round dressed up as one.
The tradeoff is wind and distance. A 45 grain bullet has a low ballistic coefficient and sheds velocity fast, so past 300 yards it drifts badly and the advantage over a heavier bullet disappears. For groundhogs at 150 yards and coyotes over a call, it is exactly right. For a 500 yard steel match it is the wrong tool entirely.
The bucket is a real convenience and worth mentioning honestly. Two hundred rounds loose in a resealable plastic pail is easier to carry to a prairie dog town than eight boxes, it stacks in a truck bed and the pail survives being sat on. The downside is that loose rounds rattle and can pick up grit, so a range bag or an ammo can is still the better long term storage.

Honest Notes on Bulk 223
Check your twist rate. A 45 grain bullet stabilises in essentially any .223 barrel including the slow 1-12 twists on older varmint rifles, so that is not a limitation here. What is worth knowing is the reverse: if your rifle has a fast 1-7 twist built for heavy bullets, very light bullets can occasionally be spun hard enough to come apart in flight. It is uncommon but it happens, and it is worth watching for on a hot day.
This is not a defensive or match load and should not be bought as one. A light fast hollow point is superb on small game and it is not what most trainers would choose for a home defence rifle, where heavier bonded or barrier blind loads perform very differently. Buy Remington 223 Rem 45gr JHP Bucket for what it is good at.
Loose packed bulk ammunition needs a look before you load it. Rounds knocking together in a bucket occasionally pick up dented case mouths or a scuffed bullet. It is worth tipping a handful out and glancing over them rather than feeding straight from the pail into a magazine.
Finally, compare the price per round honestly. Buckets look like a bargain because the number is large, but 200 rounds of 45 grain varmint ammunition sometimes costs more per round than a 500 round case of 55 grain FMJ. If you want volume practice ammunition rather than a hunting load, the FMJ case is the better buy.
For high volume practice we stock 223 Rem 55 grain FMJ in 500 round packs, and the Underwood 62 grain Controlled Chaos load is the premium hunting option. Full product data is on the Remington website.
