Description

Underwood 223 Rem 62gr Controlled Chaos is what you load when a .223 has to do more than punch paper. Underwood catalogues it as SKU 420: a 62 grain Lehigh Controlled Chaos solid monolithic copper bullet at 3100 fps for 1323 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, twenty rounds to the box, loaded in the United States.

How Controlled Chaos Works
The Controlled Chaos bullet is machined from solid copper with a hollow nose cut into segments. On impact the nose peels into several petals that separate and travel their own paths through tissue, while the solid base keeps driving straight. You get the wide, multiple wound channels people associate with a fragmenting varmint bullet and the deep straight line penetration of a monolithic solid, in the same projectile.
That combination is the argument for this over a conventional .223 hunting load. A thin jacketed varmint bullet gives spectacular surface damage and stops short on anything with bone in the way. A bonded or FMJ bullet penetrates and leaves a narrow channel. This 223 Remington hunting ammo tries to do both, and on hogs and coyotes it largely succeeds.
Sixty two grains at 3100 fps is a sensible middle weight for the cartridge. It stabilises in the 1-8 and 1-9 twist barrels that dominate modern ARs, carries better than a 55 grain bullet in wind, and stays well inside standard .223 Remington pressure so it is safe in any .223 or 5.56 chamber.

Underwood loads this in the United States on brass cases with boxer primers. Being solid copper, the bullet is lead free, which matters where non lead projectiles are mandated for hunting.

Honest Notes on This Load
Function test it before you hunt with it. Monolithic bullets sit longer in the case than lead core bullets of the same weight, and the machined nose profile is unusual. Run a magazine or two of Underwood 223 Rem 62gr Controlled Chaos through the exact rifle and magazines you will carry before the season. This is standard advice for any hunting load and it matters more with solids.
Terminal performance depends on hitting the velocity window. Controlled Chaos petals need speed to separate properly, and out of a short barrel at long range the bullet may not be moving fast enough to do what the design intends. From a 16 inch barrel, treat roughly 200 yards as the sensible limit; a 20 inch barrel buys you a bit more.
Cost is the obvious caveat. Machined solid copper bullets are expensive compared with swaged lead core, so nobody practises with this. Buy a box, confirm zero and function, then keep it for hunting and train with cheap 55 grain FMJ. Check that the two shoot to a similar point of impact at your working distance.
Finally, check the rules where you hunt. Several states set a minimum calibre or bullet weight for deer that a .223 does not meet regardless of bullet design, and a few restrict solid copper handgun and rifle projectiles. Being lead free helps in California style non lead zones but does not override calibre minimums.
For high volume practice we stock Federal 223 Rem 55 grain FMJ in 500 round packs, and the Winchester Varmint X 55 grain polymer tip is the dedicated varmint option. Full published data is on the Underwood Ammo product page.
Underwood 223 Rem 62gr Controlled Chaos suits hog hunters, predator callers and anyone running an AR-15 or bolt .223 who wants a hunting bullet rather than a varmint bullet. MAG5 Firearms is a family owned FFL in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Boxes ship where state and local law allows.
