Description

Not every 380 pistol is rated for +P, and quite a few of the small ones are not. The Underwood 380 ACP 68gr Xtreme Defender delivers the same fluted-solid terminal mechanism at standard SAAMI pressure, which makes it the load for guns the hotter version should not go through.

Standard Pressure Without Giving Up the Mechanism
The Lehigh Xtreme Defender is a solid copper bullet with deep radial flutes cut into the nose. It does not expand and does not shed weight. As it passes through tissue the flutes drive fluid outward at high pressure, opening a permanent wound cavity wider than the bullet itself while the projectile keeps its full mass and tracks straight.
That mechanism matters most in a cartridge like the 380, where conventional hollow points sit at the edge of their working velocity. Through heavy clothing a 380 hollow point often plugs and fails to open; when it does open it frequently falls short of twelve inches of penetration. The Underwood 380 ACP 68gr Xtreme Defender is indifferent to clothing because it was never depending on expansion.
Loaded to 1300 feet per second for roughly 255 foot-pounds, this is a standard-pressure load. It gives up 100 feet per second and about 40 foot-pounds to the +P version, and in exchange it is safe in any 380 chambered pistol in normal condition.

That pressure difference is the whole reason to choose this over the +P. The 380 ACP +P designation is not a SAAMI-standardized pressure, and small blowback pistols, older designs and some very light modern pocket guns are not rated for it. Running unrated ammunition accelerates wear and, in a marginal gun, is genuinely unsafe.
The Platinum Edition designation refers to the nickel-plated cases. They resist the corrosion that comes from carrying a magazine in a pocket for months, and the slicker surface helps feeding in tight chambers. For carry ammunition that sits loaded far longer than it gets fired, that is a real benefit.
The listed G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.090 is low, which is normal for a short, light, blunt-nosed pistol bullet. It has no practical bearing at defensive distances, where the Underwood 380 ACP 68gr Xtreme Defender is working inside fifteen yards.

Honest Notes on This Load
Buy the Underwood 380 ACP 68gr Xtreme Defender if you carry a 380 that is not rated for +P, or if you simply prefer to stay within SAAMI pressure in a small pistol. You get the same terminal mechanism with less wear on the gun.
Choose the +P version instead if your pistol is rated for it and you want the extra hundred feet per second. The flute mechanism scales with velocity, so the faster load does produce a slightly larger wound cavity.
Skip both for practice. A box of twenty at defensive-ammunition pricing is not range ammunition. Train with bulk 95 grain FMJ and carry this.
Rated for +P? The Underwood 380 ACP +P 68gr Xtreme Defender runs 100 fps faster. For practice, Aguila 380 ACP 95gr FMJ is inexpensive range ammunition. Underwood publishes full Xtreme Defender load data on its own site.
MAG5 Firearms stocks defensive ammunition for pocket pistols alongside practice loads. If you are unsure whether your 380 is rated for +P, bring the model number and we will check before you buy.
