Why 360 Grains in the 454 Casull

The 454 Casull is one of the most powerful revolver cartridges in regular production, and it is built to handle heavy bullets at high pressure. A 360 grain hardcast bullet takes full advantage of that capacity, delivering deep, straight-line penetration through heavy muscle and bone.

The LBT-style wide flat nose is what makes a heavy hardcast so effective. The broad face crushes a full-diameter wound channel instead of slipping through tissue, and the gas check protects the base at high velocity. The hard alloy keeps its shape, so the bullet keeps driving forward rather than expanding and slowing down.

From a lever-action carbine the load becomes even more capable. DoubleTap lists about 1,852 fps from a 20 inch Legacy Sports Puma 92, which turns a handy lever gun into a serious big-game and bear-country rifle.

DoubleTap ammunition is known for careful quality control and purpose-built loads. The DoubleTap 454 Casull 360gr Hardcast is a top choice for handgun hunters and backcountry travelers who need maximum penetration from a revolver or carbine.

Field Notes and Woods Carry Tips

Expect heavy recoil. The 454 Casull with a 360 grain bullet is a handful even in heavy revolvers, so practice with full-power loads, use a firm two-hand grip, and work up to quick follow-up shots.

Check for bullet jump after several shots. Heavy recoil can pull bullets forward in the remaining chambers, so inspect unfired cartridges and replace any that have moved before carrying them.

Sight in at the distance you plan to hunt. Heavy bullets often print higher than lighter loads in fixed-sight revolvers, so confirm your hold at 25 and 50 yards.

Hardcast solids penetrate deeply and often pass through game. Know what lies beyond your target, and avoid shooting at rock where a solid bullet can ricochet.

Clean the bore and forcing cone after range sessions. Hardcast bullets at high velocity can leave some lead behind, and keeping the barrel clean preserves accuracy for the shot that matters.

Carry the revolver in a sturdy chest rig in the backcountry and practice drawing while wearing a pack. Wear quality hearing protection when shooting, and store spare boxes in a cool, dry place.

This load is a strong fit for elk, moose, and bear hunters with a 454 Casull revolver or lever gun, and for anyone who carries the cartridge in grizzly country. If you want 454 Casull ammo built for maximum penetration on the biggest animals, the DoubleTap 454 Casull 360gr Hardcast is a proven choice.

Want a slightly lighter hardcast? The Buffalo Bore 454 Casull 325gr Hard Cast is a strong alternative, and full load data is available from DoubleTap Ammunition.
