Description

This is Trijicon doing a low power variable rather than a prism, and doing it their way. The Trijicon AccuPoint 1-8×24 Green Dot is model TR35-C-200183: a 1-8×24 on a 30mm tube, with the Dangerous Game BDC Hunter Holds reticle and a green aiming dot lit by fibre optics and tritium. Like the ACOGs, it takes no batteries at all, which is close to unique in this class.

A Variable That Needs No Battery

Almost every one to eight power scope on the market runs an LED and a coin cell. Leave it switched on in the safe and the illumination is dead when you need it. Trijicon solves that the way they have solved it since the 1980s: a fibre optic ribbon on the top of the housing gathers ambient light and feeds the aiming dot, brightening automatically as the light brightens, and a tritium lamp keeps the dot alive once the ambient light has gone. There is nothing to switch on and nothing to forget.

The trade is that you do not control it. On an LED scope you can dial the dot down to a faint pinprick for a precise shot at dusk or crank it up against snow glare. The Trijicon AccuPoint 1-8×24 Green Dot decides for you, and it decides well in the vast majority of conditions, but a shooter who wants manual brightness has to look elsewhere. There is a rubber cover supplied for the fibre if you want to force the dot dimmer, which is a crude but effective workaround.

The reticle is built for dangerous game work, which tells you the design intent. A prominent central dot for fast shooting at close range on 1x, with hunter holds below it for the longer shot at magnification. It is an odd combination on paper and a coherent one in the field.

Trijicon AccuPoint 1-8×24 Green Dot Specifications

Eye relief runs 3.3 to 4.1 inches depending on magnification, which is worth dwelling on if you have come from an ACOG. That is more than double the 1.5 inches of a 4×32 prism, and it makes the Trijicon AccuPoint 1-8×24 Green Dot a far more forgiving scope to get behind, particularly on a hard kicking rifle where a short eye relief optic is a genuine hazard. Field of view runs 20 degrees at 1x down to 2.5 degrees at 8x.

Adjustments are quarter MOA per click with 100 MOA of total travel, on a 30mm tube. The reticle sits in the second focal plane, so it stays the same visual size as you change magnification. Trijicon retail is 1,904 dollars, and the box includes lens caps, a lens pen and the warranty paperwork.

Honest Notes on the Trijicon AccuPoint 1-8×24 Green Dot

Second focal plane is the most important caveat and it is not a flaw, just a rule you have to follow. The reticle stays the same apparent size while the image grows, which means the bullet drop holds below the dot are only correct at one magnification, and on this scope that is full 8x. Use a hold at 4x and it will be wrong by a factor of two. Learn that, dial to 8x before using the stadia, and the system works perfectly. Ignore it and you will miss and blame the scope.

One power on a variable is not the same as a red dot, whatever the marketing says on any brand. There is glass between you and the target, the eye box is narrower than a dot window, and the Trijicon AccuPoint 1-8×24 Green Dot is heavier than an unmagnified optic. It is very close, close enough that plenty of dangerous game hunters carry nothing else, but if your shooting is overwhelmingly inside twenty five yards a dot is still faster.

The fibre is exposed on top of the housing by design, and that has two consequences. It collects dirt, so wipe it occasionally or the dot dims and you blame the scope. And it means brightness follows the light falling on the scope rather than the light on your target, so shooting from deep shade into a bright clearing gives a dimmer dot than you might expect.

Finally, the price. At nineteen hundred dollars retail this sits alongside serious competition from Nightforce, Leupold and Vortex that offer illuminated first focal plane reticles and finer turrets. What none of them offer is illumination that cannot run out of battery. Whether that is worth the trade depends entirely on how you hunt.
