Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless 9mm 13+1 3.37in — Superb Compact Pistol

Description

The Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless is the two-tone version of Taurus’s compact striker-fired 9mm: a matte stainless slide over a matte grey polymer frame, a 3.37-inch stainless barrel, an accessory rail, and thirteen rounds in a flush-fitting magazine.

The stainless slide is not decoration. A pistol carried against the body lives in a humid, salty environment, and stainless steel handles that better than carbon steel under a coating. The Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless simply puts the corrosion resistance in the metal rather than on top of it.

How it is built

• A 3.37-inch matte stainless barrel inside a matte stainless slide, serrated front and rear.
• A matte grey polymer frame with the colour moulded through — scratch it and the material underneath is grey too.
• The Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless holds thirteen rounds plus one, flush-fit, with two magazines in the box.
• A Picatinny rail moulded into the dust cover.
• Stippled texture on both grip panels, the front strap and the backstrap; the Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless stays put in a wet hand.

Two-tone, and what it is actually for

• Stainless resists rust from the inside out. A coated carbon steel slide is protected only while the coating is intact, and holster wear is exactly what wears a coating through.
• Grey is a genuinely practical colour on the Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless. It hides the handling marks a black frame shows, without being conspicuous the way the brighter GX2 frames are.
• The matte finish does not flash. A polished stainless slide can catch light at the wrong moment; this one does not.
• Everything mechanical is identical to the black GX2. The Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless uses the same magazines, the same holsters and the same parts.
• Fixed sights, plain and low-profile — nothing to snag and nothing to knock out of zero.

9mm Luger is standardised by SAAMI and made in enormous volume by every major manufacturer, which is why it costs what it costs. Pairing an inexpensive pistol with an inexpensive cartridge is how a new shooter gets to a thousand rounds of practice rather than a hundred — and practice, not hardware, is what makes the difference.

The GX2 comes in a run of frame colours, all in stock: the same grey frame with a black slide, the stainless slide on a black frame, cyan, tan and the plain black GX2. If you want to mount a red dot, the GX2 TORO with a stainless slide is the optic-cut version.

Why the Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless earns its place

• The Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless puts stainless steel where it matters, on a pistol at this price.
• Thirteen rounds in a compact that still conceals under a shirt.
• Colour moulded through the frame rather than sprayed over it.
• An accessory rail, which plenty of pistols in this bracket still omit.
• Two magazines included.

This is a first pistol, a carry pistol for someone who does not want to spend twice as much for the same job, and a sensible household gun. It suits anyone who carries close to the body or works outdoors, where a stainless slide earns its keep. The trigger is serviceable rather than refined and the sights are plain — the Taurus GX2 Grey Stainless is not a competition pistol and does not pretend to be one.
