Description

The Taurus GX2 Dark Purple is the compact 9mm that costs less than most people expect, finished in a deep purple polymer with a matte black slide. Taurus catalogues it as 1-GX2931DP: 13+1 rounds, a 3.37-inch matte stainless barrel and a serrated stainless slide, on a polymer frame with a Picatinny rail.

Color aside, this is the standard GX2 with no optic cut, which is the version that makes the strongest case on price. Thirteen rounds in a pistol short enough to conceal used to mean paying twice this, and the parts that matter here are the same ones fitted to the optic-ready models further up the line.

MAG5 Firearms has the Taurus GX2 Dark Purple in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.

Where the money went

  • Thirteen rounds plus one chambered, from a magazine that stacks in a shallow double column to keep the grip narrow.
  • A matte stainless barrel rather than a coated carbon one, which is the part that sees the most heat and the most fouling.
  • A serrated stainless slide with cuts deep enough to work in the wet.
  • An integral Picatinny rail, which is not a given at this price.
  • Taurus molds the Dark Purple frame in color, so the Taurus GX2 Dark Purple does not wear through to black at the holster contact points.

Handling and carry

  • A 3.37-inch barrel, which is short enough for appendix or strong-side carry and long enough to keep the irons useful.
  • Textured panels across the grip and front strap that hold the hand in place without shredding a cover garment.
  • Striker-fired action with the same trigger weight and travel on the first shot and the last.
  • Fixed iron sights with nothing sitting above them, since there is no optic cut on this model.
  • The Taurus GX2 Dark Purple weighs little enough to carry all day and enough to keep recoil civil.

Ammunition is the simple part. Every 9mm Luger load from a reputable maker is produced to the chamber and pressure standard published by SAAMI, so practice ball and defensive hollow points both headspace and cycle correctly in this barrel. We stock CCI Blazer Brass 9mm by the case for practice, and Federal 147 grain HST for carry. Stay at standard pressure or +P in a 19 ounce pistol; the +P+ loads on the market sit above the published SAAMI ceiling and are not a sensible routine diet here.

The same pistol comes in cyan and all black. If you want a factory optic cut, that is the GX2 TORO. Compare the rest of our semi-automatic handguns before deciding.

Sights, safety and controls on the Taurus GX2 Dark Purple

The feature most people miss on the spec sheet is the manual thumb safety. Taurus fits one to the GX2 alongside the usual trigger safety, and that is a deliberate choice on a budget carry gun: it gives a new shooter a mechanical stop to think about while the habits are forming, and it costs nothing to ignore once they are formed. Plenty of pistols at twice the price do not offer the option at all.

Sights are a fixed white dot up front and a drift adjustable rear, which is the right arrangement here. The rear drifts for windage with a punch and a bench, the front does not move, and nothing needs a tool you do not already own. The Taurus GX2 Dark Purple has no optic cut, and that is the point of this version: it is the cheapest way into the GX2 family, and a pistol bought for a nightstand or a first carry permit does not need a dot to be useful.

The trigger on the Taurus GX2 Dark Purple is striker fired and single action only, so the pull is the same weight and the same length on every shot. There is no long first pull to learn and no transition to manage, which again suits the shooter this pistol is aimed at.

Size, weight and how the Taurus GX2 Dark Purple carries

Taurus publishes 6.19 inches overall, 4.89 inches tall, 1.18 inches wide and 19.04 ounces unloaded. Those are compact numbers, not micro-compact ones, and the trade is deliberate: a slightly taller grip holds thirteen rounds and gives a full three finger hold, which is worth more to most people than the half inch of height they would save.

The Taurus GX2 Dark Purple at nineteen ounces is light enough to carry all day inside the waistband and heavy enough that 9mm does not snap in the hand. Two magazines come in the box, which is worth noting because a good many pistols in this price bracket ship with one.

If you want the same frame with a brighter slide, the Taurus GX2 Dark Purple with a stainless slide is the two tone version of this pistol. The plain black GX2 is the same gun in the standard finish, and we hold it several hundred deep.

Why this GX2 earns its place

  • The Taurus GX2 Dark Purple is among the least expensive routes to 13+1 of 9mm in a concealable pistol.
  • Color-through polymer ages better than any painted or sprayed finish.
  • Spare magazines are inexpensive, which is what makes regular practice affordable.
  • Holsters and light mounts are shared across the whole GX2 family rather than model specific.
  • Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.

This is a first carry pistol for a lot of buyers, and it should be. The Taurus GX2 Dark Purple leaves enough in the budget for a holster, a case of ammunition and a class, which together will do more for anyone’s shooting than a more expensive gun would. The color is a personal choice, but it also happens to make the pistol unmistakable in a household safe.
