Description

The Taurus 992 Tracker is a nine-shot rimfire revolver that ships with two cylinders in the box: one chambered for .22 LR and one for .22 WMR. Swap them at the kitchen table in under a minute and the same gun goes from a cheap afternoon of tin cans to a load with real snap on it.

This Taurus 992 Tracker is the 4-inch matte stainless version. Adjustable rear sight, black ribbed rubber grip with a cushioned insert, full underlug barrel, and a plain unported muzzle. It is the size most people find easiest to shoot well, and it is the one that fits a holster without argument.

What makes the Taurus 992 Tracker worth owning

  • Two nine-round cylinders included, one in .22 LR and one in .22 WMR, both fitted to this gun at the factory
  • 4-inch matte stainless barrel with a full-length underlug that puts weight out front and steadies the sights
  • Not ported. On a rimfire there is nothing to tame, so the muzzle is left clean and the gun stays quieter
  • Adjustable rear sight paired with a black serrated ramp front, so you can zero for either cylinder and hold the same picture
  • Black ribbed rubber grip with a cushioned insert, the same grip family Taurus fits to the centre-fire Trackers
  • Single and double action with an exposed hammer, which is exactly what you want in a gun this many people will learn on
  • Matte stainless throughout, which forgives damp hands, damp weather and the neglect a plinking gun tends to get

Taurus 992 Tracker 4 inch stainless rimfire revolver with spare 22 WMR cylinder

Two cylinders, two very different cartridges

  • .22 LR: cheap, quiet, almost no recoil, and the reason the Taurus 992 Tracker gets shot more than anything else in the safe
  • .22 WMR: roughly double the energy, a much louder report, and enough reach to make it a real small-game round
  • The cylinders are not interchangeable between guns. Keep the pair that came with yours together and do not mix them with another 992
  • Swapping takes one pin and about thirty seconds once you have done it twice
  • Point of impact will shift between the two cylinders. Confirm your zero after every swap rather than assuming it carried over
  • Rimfire ammunition is fussy by nature. Buy two or three brands, see what your gun likes, then buy that one by the brick

Both rimfire cartridges here are standardised rounds with published chamber and pressure specifications, maintained by SAAMI. That is worth knowing because rimfire ammunition varies enormously in velocity and bullet weight inside those limits, and a nine-shot cylinder gives you a quick way to compare two loads back to back.

One honest note on the double-action pull. A nine-round rimfire cylinder is a big piece of steel to rotate, and the trigger reflects that. Shot single action the Taurus 992 Tracker is pleasant and precise; shot double action it takes a deliberate press. That is a design consequence, not a defect, and it is the same on every nine-shot rimfire revolver on the market.

Why this revolver earns its place

  • Two chamberings for one purchase, one background check and one holster
  • Rimfire practice is the cheapest way there is to build trigger control that carries over to a centre-fire gun
  • Nine rounds instead of the usual six or eight, which matters more than it sounds like it should on a range day
  • The 4-inch barrel is the sweet spot on the Taurus 992 Tracker: long enough to shoot accurately, short enough to carry in the woods
  • Stainless construction and a rubber grip make this an easy gun to hand to a new shooter without worrying about it
  • A proper small-game revolver once the .22 WMR cylinder is in place

New shooters, anyone teaching one, trappers and hikers who want a light sidearm, and experienced shooters who simply want cheap trigger time are the people this gun is built for. The Taurus 992 Tracker is not a defensive handgun, and the .22 WMR cylinder does not turn it into one, but as a trainer and a small-game gun it is hard to argue with.

If you want more barrel and a vent rib, the 6.5-inch Taurus 992 Tracker is the same idea stretched out for the bench. If you would rather have something small enough to pocket, the eight-shot Taurus 942 in .22 LR and the 942M in .22 WMR cover the same cartridges on a much smaller frame.

For the centre-fire equivalent of the convertible idea, look at the Taurus 692 with its .357 and 9mm cylinders. And if it is the Tracker frame you like rather than the rimfire chambering, the seven-shot Tracker 627 in .357 Magnum is the same gun with a grown-up appetite.

Every Taurus 992 Tracker ships with both cylinders, the factory case, the manual and a lock. Transfers go through your FFL and we handle our end of the paperwork the same day.
