Description
The Taurus 692 Executive Grade is the convertible seven-shot given the full treatment: hand-polished stainless throughout, checkered Altamont walnut panels with an inlaid medallion, and a fibre-optic front sight over a 3-inch ported barrel.
Two cylinders come with the Taurus 692 Executive Grade. One takes .357 Magnum and .38 Special, the other takes 9mm Luger, and swapping between them takes about a minute. That combination in a gun finished to this standard is unusual at any price.
What the Executive Grade treatment adds
- The Taurus 692 Executive Grade is hand-polished stainless steel on the frame, cylinder and barrel, rather than the usual matte finish
- Checkered Altamont walnut grip panels with an inlaid medallion
- Fibre-optic front sight over an adjustable rear
- Seven rounds in both cylinders, which is one more than most revolvers in this class
- 3-inch ported barrel, which keeps the muzzle down on full-power magnum loads
- The Taurus 692 Executive Grade is fitted and finished by hand before it leaves the factory
- Transfer bar safety and an exposed hammer for deliberate single-action shots

How the two cylinders actually work
- The .357 cylinder takes .357 Magnum and .38 Special, which covers everything from cheap practice to full-power loads
- The 9mm cylinder is chambered so the cartridge headspaces on the case mouth. Rounds fire loose and moon clips are not required
- Two Stellar clips come with the gun. They are there to make loading and extraction quick, not to hold the round in place
- Swapping cylinders is a simple operation with the crane open. Give yourself a minute the first time and thirty seconds thereafter
- 9mm in a revolver is a genuinely useful thing: it is the cheapest centre-fire ammunition there is and it costs you nothing in reliability
- Clean both cylinders properly. Carbon rings build up fast in a .357 chamber shot mostly with .38

All three cartridges this revolver takes are standardised, with chamber dimensions and pressures published by SAAMI. The .357 and .38 share a case and differ in length; the 9mm is a different case entirely, which is exactly why it needs its own cylinder rather than an adapter.
One honest note on the polish. A hand-polished stainless finish is beautiful and it shows fingerprints, holster marks and handling immediately. If a Taurus 692 Executive Grade is going into a safe and coming out for range days it will look superb for decades. If it is going to be carried daily in a leather holster, the matte stainless 692 costs considerably less and will look better after a year of it.
Why this revolver earns its place
- Three cartridges from one gun, with seven rounds in each cylinder
- A hand-polished finish and real walnut, which is not something you find at this price often
- 9mm makes the Taurus 692 Executive Grade one of the cheapest centre-fire revolvers to feed
- Porting and a three-inch barrel that together keep magnum recoil in check
- A fibre-optic front sight, which is faster to find than a plain blade in poor light
- A gun that will be worth owning in twenty years rather than simply worn out
Collectors, revolver enthusiasts and anyone who wants one very good wheelgun rather than three ordinary ones. The Taurus 692 Executive Grade is also a sensible practical choice, because the 9mm cylinder makes it cheap to shoot often.
If you want the same convertible without the polish and walnut, the stainless 692 with a 3-inch ported barrel is the working version, with a black 3-inch and a 6.5-inch vent rib alongside it.
For another Executive Grade Taurus, the 605 Executive Grade is the five-shot version of the same idea. And for a plain seven-shot .357, the Tracker 627 is the straightforward alternative.
Every Taurus 692 Executive Grade ships with both cylinders, the Stellar clips, the case, the manual and a lock. Transfers go to your FFL and our end of the paperwork is done the same day.
