Description

The Taurus 58 380 ACP is a full-size, hammer-fired .380 with an aluminium frame, a four-inch barrel and fifteen rounds in the magazine. It is the opposite of the pocket .380 that most people picture when they hear the cartridge, and that is exactly why it is worth a look.

Almost every .380 on the market is a small, light, blowback pistol, and a small light blowback pistol makes a mild cartridge feel sharp. The Taurus 58 380 ACP puts the same cartridge in a full-size gun with a metal frame and a proper grip, and the result is one of the softest-shooting centre-fire pistols you can buy.

What is in the gun

  • The Taurus 58 380 ACP holds fifteen rounds plus one — roughly double what a pocket .380 holds, and more than many full-size 9mm pistols of the same era.
  • A four-inch matte black stainless barrel in a matte black serrated alloy steel slide.
  • A matte black aluminium frame with a beavertail, so the web of the hand sits high and clear of the hammer.
  • Checkered black polymer grip panels on a classic single-stack-profile frame — the Taurus 58 380 ACP handles like a scaled-down service pistol, not like a mouse gun.
  • An exposed hammer with a frame-mounted safety lever, and fixed sights.

Who a full-size .380 is really for

  • Recoil is genuinely light. Between the mild cartridge, the four-inch barrel and the weight of a metal frame, the Taurus 58 380 ACP is about as gentle as a centre-fire pistol gets.
  • That makes it a serious option for a shooter with arthritis, a hand injury, or reduced grip strength who still wants real capacity.
  • Be clear-eyed about the cartridge. .380 ACP carries meaningfully less energy than 9mm. It is the right answer when recoil or slide strength is a genuine constraint, not a default choice.
  • There is no accessory rail on this model, so a weapon light means a grip-mounted or trigger-guard unit rather than a rail mount.
  • It is a belt or nightstand gun. A metal-framed four-inch pistol is not going in a pocket, whatever the calibre on the barrel.

.380 ACP — properly 9mm Browning Short — is standardised by SAAMI at a much lower pressure than 9mm Luger, which is why pistols chambered for it can be built lighter and simpler. From a four-inch barrel the good modern defensive loads do considerably better than they manage from the two-and-a-half-inch barrels the cartridge is usually asked to work in, so this is .380 close to its best.

If you want .380 in something you can carry concealed, MAG5 stocks the Taurus GX4 Carry in .380 ACP. For a 9mm of comparable size and capacity, look at the GX4 Carry in 9mm or the GX2 Compact, both of which hold fifteen and thirteen rounds respectively.

Why the Taurus 58 380 ACP earns its place

  • The Taurus 58 380 ACP holds fifteen rounds, which almost nothing else in the cartridge in the cartridge offers.
  • A metal frame and a four-inch barrel, so the recoil impulse is genuinely soft.
  • A full grip and a beavertail, which makes it comfortable to shoot for a whole range session.
  • A hammer you can see and a safety you can feel, for shooters who prefer that to a striker.
  • Cheap enough to shoot regularly, in a cartridge that is widely stocked.

This suits a home-defence and range pistol for someone who finds 9mm recoil unpleasant or a slide hard to rack, and it suits anyone who simply likes a hammer-fired metal pistol. The Taurus 58 380 ACP is not a concealed-carry gun in the modern sense and does not try to be; if that is the requirement, a micro-compact is the right tool. What this is, is the most pleasant way to put fifteen rounds of centre-fire ammunition on a target.
