Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm optics ready pistol

The Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm is a hard cartridge in a package you can actually wear. Eleven rounds, 27 ounces, 6.75 inches end to end, with a factory optic cut and the best trigger Springfield puts in a striker fired pistol. Ten millimeter has usually meant a full size gun or a 1911, and this is neither.

Two magazines come in the box with the Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm, which is worth knowing because 10mm magazines are not cheap.

Ten Millimeter That Carries

Most 10mm pistols are big. Full size polymer guns and steel 1911s dominate the category because the cartridge is long and works the action hard, and neither is comfortable on a belt for a full day. At 6.75 inches overall and 4.58 inches tall this one is genuinely compact, and 27 ounces is light for the chambering.

What you give up is barrel. Three point eight inches costs velocity against a 4.5 or 5 inch gun, and 10mm is a cartridge that rewards barrel length more than most because it burns a slow powder charge. Full power hunting loads will not reach their advertised numbers here. For defensive distances that matters very little, but if you bought 10mm specifically for ballistics, know what you are trading.

Recoil in a 27 ounce 10mm is real. It is not unmanageable, and the grip and the low bore axis help a great deal, but it is a firm shove rather than a push and it takes practice to control on a fast string. Shooters who have only fired 9mm should expect an adjustment period.

Trigger, Optic Cut And Barrel

The Match Enhanced Trigger Assembly, which Springfield abbreviates to META, is the main reason to buy an Elite over a standard XD-M. It is a flat faced trigger with a short, clean break and a positive reset you can feel through a glove. On a cartridge that recoils this hard, a trigger that lets you break the shot without disturbing the sights matters more than it does on a nine.

A META flat trigger also changes where your finger sits. The flat face gives a consistent contact point and slightly better mechanical advantage at the bottom of the shoe, so the pull feels lighter than the same weight on a curved trigger. It is a small ergonomic detail that shows up directly in group size.

OSP means the forged steel slide leaves the factory milled and finished for a micro red dot rather than needing aftermarket work. A dot is arguably worth more on a 10mm than on any other chambering, because the reticle shows you exactly how much the muzzle is climbing and how well your grip is managing it. Behind the cut sit a fiber optic front sight and a Tactical Rack U-Dot rear whose squared shelf lets you cycle the slide one handed. The barrel is 3.8 inches of hammer forged steel with a Melonite finish and a 1:10 twist.

Why Buyers Choose The Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm

This is close to the only genuinely compact 10mm with a factory optic cut and a good trigger. If you want the cartridge in a gun you can conceal under a jacket rather than one you keep in a truck, the field is small and this is at the front of it.

Eleven rounds is respectable for the chambering. Most 10mm 1911s hold eight, and the full size polymer guns that hold more are considerably larger. Two magazines ship in the box, which is standard for the XD-M line and better than several competitors manage.

The factory optic cut removes several hundred dollars and a few weeks of downtime. Aftermarket milling cuts through the existing finish, while a factory cut is machined before the coating goes on. On a 10mm slide that runs at higher velocity than a 9mm, finish integrity around the cut is worth having.

The honest limitations: 10mm out of 3.8 inches gives up meaningful velocity against a longer barrel, and much of what is sold as 10mm is loaded soft, closer to .40 S&W, so read the box carefully. Ammunition costs considerably more than 9mm. Recoil is firm in a 27 ounce gun and takes practice. And holster options are narrower than for a 9mm service pistol, though they exist.

Who Should Buy The Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm

This suits the hiker, hunter or rancher who wants serious energy in a sidearm they will actually carry rather than leave in a pack, and the shooter who likes 10mm and wants a modern optic ready gun to shoot it in. It also works well as a home defense pistol for anyone comfortable with the recoil, particularly with a dot mounted. Buyers who want maximum velocity from full power hunting loads should choose the 4.5 inch full size model instead. New shooters should start with a 9mm and come back to this, and anyone shooting high volume should budget honestly for ammunition.

Before You Order A Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm

Distributor restrictions on this SKU: no direct shipment to Rhode Island or Washington, and no sale to California, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. Tell us the destination when you order and we will check before we take your money.

The Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm slide is cut for an optic and ships with the cover plate on, so a dot is a separate purchase. Ten millimeter recoils hard enough on a pistol this size that mounting screws and optic choice matter more than they do on a 9mm; use the correct plate, torque the screws properly and check the zero after the first hundred rounds.

Feed the Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm honestly. PMC Bronze 10mm 170gr and CCI Blazer Brass 10mm 180gr are the loads we hold in depth, and Federal 10mm 180gr FMJ is the other practice option. A short-barreled 10mm like the Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm will not reach the velocities the cartridge is famous for, so if you are buying it for the ballistics rather than the platform, read the box figures against a 4.5 or 5 inch barrel and expect less from a 3.8.

Other 10mm Springfields we carry: the XD-M Elite 10mm OSP in the longer barrel, and the XD-M Elite 10mm Gear Up package, which bundles extra magazines and a bag with the Springfield XD-M Elite Compact 10mm’s full-size sibling.

Chamber and pressure standards for 10mm Auto are published by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute; the factory page is at Springfield Armory.
