Description

Smith Wesson 15 Stripped Lower Receiver black aluminum AR-15 stripped lower receiver

The Smith Wesson 15 Stripped Lower Receiver is a bare AR-15 lower receiver from Smith and Wesson, machined from aircraft grade aluminum and finished in black, marked for 223 Remington and ready for whatever parts kit and build you have in mind.

Smith Wesson 15 Stripped Lower Receiver Where an AR Build Starts

On an AR-15 the lower receiver is the serialised part. Legally it is the firearm; everything else is a component you can buy without paperwork. That makes a stripped lower the natural starting point for a build, because it settles the transfer once and leaves every other decision open.

Stripped means exactly that. There is no trigger group, no safety selector, no grip, no buffer tube and no stock. You supply all of it, which is the point: a builder choosing a two-stage trigger, a particular grip and a specific stock does not want to pay for parts they intend to remove.

The receiver is machined from aircraft grade aluminum and wears a black finish, with M&P15 markings on the magazine well.

What Goes Into It

A lower parts kit covers the small components: trigger, hammer, disconnector, safety selector, bolt catch, magazine release, pivot and takedown pins, springs and detents. Kits are inexpensive and widely available, and installing one is a straightforward job with a punch set and about an hour of patience.

Beyond that you need a buffer tube assembly with a buffer and spring, a grip, and a stock or brace. Then any mil-spec upper receiver group pins straight on and the rifle is complete.

Being honest about the process: installing a lower parts kit is the fiddliest part of building an AR, and the bolt catch roll pin and the safety detent spring have launched across a good many workshops. If that does not appeal, a complete lower is the alternative.

Legal Points Before You Build

Check your state and local law before you start. Some states restrict specific features such as adjustable stocks, pistol grips, flash hiders and detachable magazines, and a lower you build with those features may not be legal where you live even though the parts are sold freely elsewhere.

Barrel length matters too. Pairing a lower fitted with a stock to an upper under 16 inches creates a short-barrelled rifle, which requires federal registration and a tax stamp before assembly, not after. Building first and registering later is not an option the law allows.

Finally, a lower you assemble yourself is yours to keep, and in most jurisdictions it may not be sold or transferred as a manufactured firearm. If you might sell it later, look up the rules that apply to you before you begin.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson 15 Stripped Lower Receiver

A stripped lower is the least expensive way to start a build, and it means you pay only for the parts you actually want in the finished rifle.

Smith and Wesson has been building the M&P15 since 2006, and their receivers are consistently machined with properly cut threads and correctly sized pin holes, which is not universal in the budget end of the market.

One registered lower can host an unlimited number of uppers over its life, so a single transfer covers every calibre and barrel length you decide to try later.

Building your own lower teaches you how the rifle works, which is worth something the first time one malfunctions at the range.

Who Should Buy It

The Smith Wesson 15 Stripped Lower Receiver suits builders assembling an AR-15 from parts, shooters who want a second registered lower so multiple uppers can be kept assembled, and anyone with specific preferences about triggers and furniture. Remember this is a firearm and must ship to your chosen licensed dealer for transfer.
