A 28 gauge walnut shotgun is about as classic as upland hunting gets, and the ACE-R brings that feel to a modern semi-auto. The black receiver and walnut furniture look traditional, while the inertia action, removable trigger group and shim kit are thoroughly modern. The 26-inch barrel keeps the gun lively and fast to mount in cover.
Inertia Plus Bolt
The Retay ACE-R 28 Gauge Walnut 26″ cycles with Retay’s Inertia Plus bolt, a rotating design with full lock-up that avoids the rattle some inertia guns have. With no gas system, there is nothing to foul and the action stays light and simple. Inertia guns do need a short break-in, and very light target loads may not cycle reliably at first, so start with standard 28 gauge field loads.
The push-button trigger group comes out without tools for cleaning, and Retay’s Easy Out feature lets you unload the magazine without cycling shells through the action.
Deep Bore Drilled Barrel and Chokes
Retay’s Dead Straight deep bore drilled barrel is paired with a factory-lengthened forcing cone that Retay says puts up to 20 percent more pellets on target. Six chokes are included: cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, improved modified, full and an extended long-range waterfowl tube. Cylinder and improved cylinder are ideal for close-flushing birds; modified helps on late-season pheasants.
Fit and Recoil
Length of pull is 14.5 inches with a shim kit for drop and cast. The Airy recoil reduction system cuts felt recoil by up to 30 percent, and an oversized reversible safety suits left-handed shooters. A single fiber optic bead gives a fast reference without distracting from the bird.
