Description
The Proof Research Ascension in 7mm Backcountry is a deliberate pairing: a cartridge engineered to give long-barrel performance from a short barrel, fitted to a rifle engineered to weigh as little as possible without giving up accuracy. This is the green jungle camo configuration with a 20 inch barrel, a titanium action and Proof’s sub half-MOA accuracy guarantee. The camo is moulded into the carbon fiber stock rather than painted on, so it does not wear off at the grip.
Why 7mm Backcountry in a 20 Inch Barrel
7mm Backcountry is built on a steel alloy case rather than brass, which lets it run at pressures conventional cartridges cannot safely reach. The practical consequence is velocity from a short barrel that normally requires a long one. In a 20 inch tube it does what a 7mm magnum does in 24 inches, which is exactly the problem a mountain rifle is trying to solve.
Pair that with the Proof Research Ascension platform and the arithmetic works out well. A shorter barrel is lighter and stiffer, a carbon-wrapped barrel is lighter again, and a titanium action removes more weight still. The result handles like a carbine and shoots like a long-range rig.

A note on 7mm Backcountry ammunition: because the cartridge uses a proprietary steel alloy case, it is not a handloading proposition in the ordinary sense and factory ammunition supply is still expanding. Check availability before committing, particularly if you shoot a lot of practice rounds. Muzzle brakes are available from the factory at additional cost, and the same rifle is offered in black jungle camo alongside the granite finishes.
Why it is worth considering
- Green jungle camo moulded into the carbon shell, not painted on
- 7mm Backcountry delivers magnum velocity from a 20 inch barrel
- Patented carbon-fiber-wrapped barrel that cuts weight and sheds heat faster than steel
- Zermatt Arms titanium action, among the most rigid available at this weight
- Sub half-MOA accuracy guarantee, with every rifle test fired before it ships
- TriggerTech trigger and BDL magazine as standard, not upgrades
Who it suits
The Proof Research Ascension in green jungle camo suits the hunter working timber and green country rather than rock and scree, where the black pattern reads darker than the background. Mechanically it is identical to the black version, so the choice is about where you hunt — and the green has the edge anywhere the vegetation is still alive.

Optics and Setup for the Proof Research Ascension
A rifle built around a 20 inch barrel and a five-and-a-half-pound weight figure asks for restraint in what goes on top of it. A compact 3-18 or 4-16 with a 44mm objective keeps the balance intact; a 56mm long-range scope will undo most of what the titanium action and carbon barrel bought you. The split-rail base takes standard Picatinny rings, and the raised comb on the Ascension stock is cut for the ring heights a 44mm objective needs.
