Description

PPU RangeMaster 7.62x51 145gr FMJBT sealed metal ammunition can

Anyone who owns an M1A, an FAL, a PTR or an AR-10 knows that 7.62 NATO is the expensive part of the hobby. The PPU RangeMaster 7.62×51 145gr FMJBT is the answer: military-profile ball, brass cased, five hundred rounds sealed in metal.

What M80 Ball Actually Is

M80 is the NATO designation for standard 7.62×51 ball: a 145 to 147 grain full metal jacket boat tail bullet at roughly 2800 feet per second. It is what the M60, the M240, the M14 and every NATO battle rifle was designed around, and it remains the reference load against which everything else in the cartridge is measured.

The PPU RangeMaster 7.62×51 145gr FMJBT is that specification loaded on brass rather than steel. At 2835 feet per second it produces 2587 foot-pounds at the muzzle, and the boat tail gives a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.404, which is respectable for a service bullet and keeps the trajectory usable to 500 yards.

Prvi Partizan has been making ammunition in Uzice, Serbia since 1928, much of it to military specification. The RangeMaster Line is their practice-grade family, and consistency between lots is noticeably better than the cheapest imported ball. That matters if you zero a rifle and expect it to stay zeroed across a case.

PPU RangeMaster 7.62×51 145gr FMJBT Specifications

Brass and boxer primers are the two details that separate this from the cheapest 7.62 on the shelf. Boxer-primed brass is fully reloadable, and 7.62×51 brass is worth saving; five hundred once-fired cases are a genuine asset to anyone who loads. Steel-cased alternatives cost slightly less and leave you with nothing.

The sealed metal can is the storage argument. Ammunition kept dry in metal stays serviceable indefinitely, while loose cartons in a garage absorb humidity and eventually produce corroded cases and misfires. Five hundred rounds is also a sensible unit: enough to last a season of practice without committing to a pallet.

Two mechanical notes. Gas guns like the M1A and the FAL prefer bullet weights and pressures near the M80 specification, and this load sits there, so it cycles correctly without an adjustable gas plug. And note the PPU RangeMaster 7.62×51 145gr FMJBT is 7.62×51 NATO rather than commercial 308 Winchester; the two are dimensionally interchangeable in most modern rifles but a few older or tight-chambered 308 sporters are fussy about NATO-spec ammunition.

Honest Notes on Buying by the Can

Buy the PPU RangeMaster 7.62×51 145gr FMJBT if you shoot an M1A, FAL, PTR, AR-10 or bolt-action 308 in volume. Brass-cased NATO ball at can pricing is the most sensible way to feed one, and the cases are worth keeping.

Skip it if you want match accuracy. This is service-grade ammunition and will group somewhere in the 2 to 3 MOA range from a typical rifle. A match load is the answer for precision work.

Skip it for hunting. Full metal jacket does not expand, and in most states it is not legal for big game. A soft point or a controlled-expansion bullet is the correct choice there.

Same brand in 5.56: the PPU RangeMaster 5.56×45 55gr FMJBT 1000 round can. For match work in 308, see the Berger 308 Win 175gr OTM Tactical. Prvi Partizan publishes its full RangeMaster Line catalogue on its own site.

MAG5 Firearms sells 7.62 NATO by the box, the can and the pallet. If you are buying in volume, ask about freight before you order rather than after.
