Description

The 175 grain 308 load has been the standard for precision rifle work since the military settled on it, and the Berger 308 Win 175gr OTM Tactical is Berger version of that recipe with a hybrid ogive doing the accuracy work.

Why 175 Grain Became the 308 Standard
When the US military moved from the 168 grain match load to a 175 grain bullet for the M118LR, the reason was transonic behaviour at 1000 yards rather than accuracy at 300. The heavier, longer bullet holds velocity better and stays stable through the transonic band where the 168 grain load had a habit of destabilizing. Every serious 308 precision shooter has been following that logic since.
The Berger 308 Win 175gr OTM Tactical takes that established weight and adds the hybrid ogive. A tangent ogive is forgiving of seating depth but draggy; a secant ogive is efficient but fussy. Berger blends the two so the bullet keeps most of the aerodynamic advantage while tolerating the seating variation inherent in factory ammunition.
The result is a G7 ballistic coefficient of 0.263 with a form factor of 1.002, which is at the top of what a 175 grain 30 caliber bullet achieves. Loaded to 2668 feet per second from a 26 inch barrel, it carries 2766 foot-pounds at the muzzle and still 1835 at 300 yards.
Berger 308 Win 175gr OTM Tactical Specifications
Open tip match is a manufacturing description, not a terminal one. The hollow point exists because the jacket is drawn from the base forward, which puts the thickest, most concentric part of the jacket at the nose where it matters for accuracy. It is not designed to expand, and it should not be used as a hunting bullet.
Practically, the Berger 308 Win 175gr OTM Tactical is for precision rifle series matches, F-Class, steel at distance and any training where consistency between rounds is the point. Berger holds these to match tolerances on jacket concentricity and weight, which is what shows up as a smaller group at 600 yards rather than a smaller group at 100.
Maximum overall length is 2.810 inches, so the round feeds from any standard 308 magazine including AICS pattern boxes. Minimum twist is 1:13, met by every factory 308 barrel.

Honest Notes on This Load
Buy the Berger 308 Win 175gr OTM Tactical if you shoot precision rifle matches, F-Class or long-range steel with a 308 and want factory ammunition that performs like a worked-up handload. It is also the sensible choice for a gas gun that needs consistent, magazine-length ammunition.
Skip it for hunting. This is an open tip match bullet with no expansion design, and using it on game is a reliable way to produce a pencil-through wound and a lost animal. The Classic Hunter loads in the same cartridge are the correct choice there.
Understand the cartridge limitation honestly: 308 Winchester with a 175 grain bullet goes transonic somewhere around 950 to 1050 yards depending on conditions. If your matches routinely go past that, a 6.5 Creedmoor or a 6mm will serve you better.
Hunting instead? The Berger 308 Win 168gr Classic Hunter is the expanding option in the same cartridge. For distances past 308 range, the Berger 300 Norma Mag 215gr Hybrid Target is the ELR answer. Berger publishes full OTM Tactical ballistic data on its own site.
