Description

The North American Arms Recluse 22 Magnum (model NAA-RECLUSE) is a five-shot stainless mini revolver with something no classic NAA Mini has: a cylinder that swings out of the frame. It pairs a 2 inch slab-sided barrel with XS white dot sights and an oversized rubber grip, and weighs 8.8 ounces.

North American Arms Recluse 22 Magnum Overview

NAA built its reputation on tiny single-action revolvers that you load by removing the cylinder pin. The Recluse keeps the single-action spur-trigger design and the 22 WMR chambering, but the cylinder swings out to the side on a crane for loading and unloading, with an ejector rod to push out the empties. Add a milled, slab-sided 2 inch barrel and real dovetailed sights, and you get the most modern-looking gun in the NAA lineup, sized to live in a front pocket.

Swing-Out Loading

The swing-out cylinder is the headline feature. Instead of pulling the pin and juggling a loose cylinder, you open the cylinder to the side, push the ejector rod and drop in five fresh cartridges. It is faster and far less fiddly than the traditional NAA method. Reviewers note that the ejector stroke is short, so 22 Magnum cases sometimes need to be plucked out with a fingernail, and loading takes a little practice in the first few sessions.

XS Sights and a Fuller Grip

The XS white dot sights are dovetailed into the frame and barrel, giving a fast, clear sight picture that is much easier to find than the tiny blades on other mini-revolvers. They are best used as a quick aiming reference at close range, not for bullseye shooting. The oversized rubber grip gives your hand more to hold than a birdshead grip, which helps control the sharp report of 22 Magnum from a 2 inch barrel.

Single-Action Spur Trigger

The Recluse is single action only. You cock the hammer for each shot and press a short spur trigger, with no trigger guard. A half-cock position is used for loading, and NAA safety notches between the chambers let you lower the hammer so it does not rest on a cartridge. Learn that procedure with the gun unloaded, and always carry the Recluse in a holster that fully covers the trigger.

22 Magnum From a Short Barrel

A 2 inch barrel gives up a lot of the velocity printed on a box of 22 WMR, and it produces more blast and flash than recoil. Choose loads designed for short barrels and test them in your gun before you trust them; one review reported occasional light strikes with some defensive loads that fired on a second hammer strike. Rimfire ammunition is inherently less reliable than centerfire, so plan your expectations around that.

Who Should Choose the Recluse

The Recluse suits shooters who love the NAA concept but want easier loading and better sights, and it makes an excellent deep-concealment backup or trail gun for snakes and small pests. It is not a replacement for a centerfire carry pistol: five rounds, a single-action trigger and slow reloads all limit it. NAA’s own product text mentions a 1 1/8 inch barrel, but its spec table, distributors and reviewers list 2 inches for this UPC.

State Laws and Ownership

Mini-revolvers are legal to own in most states, but handgun purchase rules vary widely. Some states require a permit or license before you can buy any handgun, and a few keep a roster of approved models; NAA revolvers are not on every roster, so buyers in California and Massachusetts should confirm before ordering. Carrying any handgun concealed requires a valid permit in many states, and reciprocity between states is not automatic. Ask your receiving FFL to confirm local transfer requirements.

Before You Buy

Federal law requires that this handgun ship to a licensed FFL dealer, where you will complete ATF Form 4473 and a background check. You must be at least 21 years old to buy a handgun from a dealer. Fire only 22 WMR in this revolver, never 22 LR or other rimfire cartridges. Read the owner’s manual on half-cock loading and safety notch carry before loading the gun, and confirm your state’s handgun purchase and carry rules.

Who It Is For

The North American Arms Recluse 22 Magnum is a great fit for NAA fans who want swing-out loading, pocket carriers looking for a light 22 Magnum backup, and hikers who want a small revolver with sights they can actually see.
