Description
The North American Arms Earl 22 WMR 4in is a pocket-sized tribute to the 1858 Remington percussion revolver. It packs five rounds of .22 Magnum into a stainless frame with a four-inch octagonal barrel, rosewood boot grip and a faux loading lever, giving it far more sight radius than a typical NAA mini.

North American Arms Earl 22 WMR 4in Overview
NAA calls this model the 1860-4. The 4-inch barrel stretches the gun to 7.75 inches overall while the weight stays at a featherlight 8.9 ounces. That longer barrel is the real story: it gives you a usable sight picture with the stainless post front sight and wrings noticeably more velocity out of a .22 Magnum than the one-inch snub models do. The faux loading lever and cylinder pin are styled after the old cap-and-ball guns, but this is a modern cartridge revolver built entirely from stainless steel in Provo, Utah.
Old West Looks, Pocket Size
The Earl is designed to look like a scaled-down frontier revolver, and it does so convincingly. The octagonal barrel, the lever under the barrel and the walnut-toned rosewood grip catch eyes at the range or on a display shelf. It is still small enough to ride in a vest pocket or a small belt holster, which makes it a fun companion for hiking, camp chores or a trip to the ranch.

How the Single Action Works
Like every NAA mini revolver, it is single action only: you cock the hammer for each shot and the spur trigger drops into place. For carry, NAA provides safety notches between the chambers so the hammer can rest between cartridges rather than on a live rim. Learn the half-cock and rest-notch procedure from the manual before you carry it. Loading is done by pulling the cylinder pin and removing the cylinder, so reloads are slow and deliberate. That is part of the charm for plinking, but it is a real limitation if you are thinking of this gun for self-defense.
Shooting the 4-Inch Barrel
Compared with the snub-nosed NAA magnums, the 4-inch Earl is easier to hit with at 10 to 15 yards because the sight radius is longer and the muzzle blast is tamer. Recoil is mild, but the small boot grip leaves room for only two fingers on most hands. A pest-control load such as a 40-grain JHP gives it real utility for snakes and small varmints around the property.

Ammunition Notes
This model is a magnum-only gun, so feed it .22 WMR only. Rimfire cartridges are inherently less reliable than centerfire rounds, so an occasional dud is normal; in a revolver you simply cock the hammer again to bring a fresh chamber under it. NAA offers a version with an extra .22 LR cylinder, sold as the 1860-4C, if you want cheaper practice ammunition. Magnum rimfire costs noticeably more per round than .22 LR and has been harder to find at times.
Care and Accessories
Stainless steel resists rust, but rimfire fouling builds up around the cylinder face and forcing cone, so clean it after each outing. NAA and DeSantis both make leather holsters cut for the Earl frame, and replacement grips are available from NAA if you want a different look.
State Laws and Ownership
Mini revolvers are legal in most states, but a few jurisdictions add their own hurdles. California and Massachusetts only allow sales of models on their approved handgun rosters, and several states require a purchase permit or firearm ID card first. Pennsylvania buyers complete a PICS check at the receiving dealer. Carry rules also differ widely, so confirm your state and local laws, including permit reciprocity, before you carry it.
