Description

The Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol is an AR-pattern 9mm built around the one decision that makes a pistol caliber gun cheap to own: it feeds from double stack Glock magazines. Freedom Ordnance FX9P8 is the part number. An 8.25 inch black nitride barrel, a 7.375 inch free-floating M-LOK handguard, a hard coat anodized aluminum receiver and a KAK Shockwave brace, with a 33-round magazine in the box.

If you already own a Glock, or own an AR, this gun asks you to learn almost nothing new. The controls on the Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol are AR controls. The magazines are ones you can buy anywhere for very little. The Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol sits at six pounds, which is heavy for a handgun and exactly what you want when a blowback action is pushing back at you.

Why a Glock magazine 9mm AR pistol makes sense

  • Magazines cost a fraction of what proprietary ones do, and are everywhere
  • Capacity options run from 10 rounds to a 50-round drum on the same gun
  • AR controls mean no new manual of arms if you already shoot one
  • A free-floating handguard is unusual at this size and helps accuracy
  • Six pounds of gun turns 9mm recoil into almost nothing

A Glock magazine 9mm AR pistol: the whole economic argument

A Glock magazine 9mm AR pistol starts with the 33-round magazine that ships with the gun, and after that you are shopping in the largest and cheapest 9mm magazine market in existence. Magpul PMAG 17-round Glock magazines are what we sell most of, by an enormous margin. 27-round PMAGs suit a pistol of this size better, and the PMAG D-50 drum built for Glock-pattern 9mm carbines exists if you want fifty rounds at a time. Nothing about the Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol requires a proprietary magazine at any price.

No sights are included, and that is not a complaint

Zanders records the sights as none, and Freedom Ordnance says the same. The Freedom Ordnance FX9P8 upper has a full-length Picatinny rail and the intention is that you fit whatever you want to it. Budget for a red dot or a set of folding irons at the same time you budget for the Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol, because out of the box there is nothing to aim with. This is normal for an AR-pattern pistol and it catches first-time buyers every time.

The KAK Shockwave brace pistol question, the threads and the law

A KAK Shockwave brace pistol is what leaves the factory here, with the brace already fitted. The regulatory treatment of pistol braces has changed more than once in recent years and is worth checking against current federal and Pennsylvania rules before you buy. What is not ambiguous: fitting an actual shoulder stock to this pistol creates a short barreled rifle under federal law and requires ATF approval before the parts go together.

The barrel is threaded 1/2×28, the standard 9mm pitch, so brakes and compensators fit directly. A suppressor is an NFA item requiring ATF approval and a tax stamp and is not something MAG5 stocks.

Ammunition for an 8.25 inch 9mm AR pistol

An 8.25 inch 9mm AR pistol running direct blowback is about as tolerant as an action gets. Federal 130 grain Syntech PCC was designed for pistol caliber carbines and its polymer jacket keeps fouling down, which matters more on a blowback gun than most. Federal 115 grain FMJ is the cheaper practice option for the Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol and we stock it deep.

Cross-shopping

The Military Armament Corp MAC IX takes MP5 magazines instead and is shorter than the Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol. The Ruger PC Charger also takes Glock magazines, weighs less and has a 6.5 inch barrel. Freedom Ordnance also builds an FX9 Elite with a 13.5 inch barrel if you want more of it.

Worth knowing before you buy

  • 9mm Luger is a SAAMI standardized cartridge, so factory ammunition is consistent across brands. See the SAAMI published standards.
  • No sights are included. You will need an optic or irons before this gun is usable.
  • Pistol brace regulation has shifted repeatedly. Check the current position before you buy, and never fit a shoulder stock without ATF approval.
  • This model cannot be sold to California or Oregon, cannot be sold under the Illinois PICA, and cannot be direct shipped to Rhode Island or Washington.

Buy the Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol if you want a braced 9mm with AR ergonomics, a free-floating handguard and the cheapest magazine supply on the market, and you are happy to choose your own sighting system. It is a range gun and a truck gun rather than a carry gun, and at six pounds it makes 9mm about as pleasant as 9mm gets.

MAG5 Firearms is a licensed dealer in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Every firearm ships to your FFL. Ask us about optics, magazines or muzzle devices for the Freedom Ordnance FX9 Pistol before you order, and ask us about the brace question too, because it is the one that changes.
