The Light Skeet Combination
Skeet targets are close, fast and predictable, and none of that calls for a heavy payload. What it calls for is a dense, even pattern and a gun that comes to your shoulder the same way on the hundredth bird as the first. A one ounce skeet load in number 8 gives you a very high pellet count for the charge weight, and the reduced payload takes real recoil out of a long day.
The tradeoff sits entirely at distance. Number 8 pellets shed energy faster than 7.5, and one ounce holds fewer of them than 1 1/8. Past about thirty five yards this shell starts chipping targets rather than smoking them. Inside that range, which covers all of skeet and most close sporting presentations, it is genuinely hard to beat.
Construction is the same across the All American line. High antimony lead deforms less as it is squeezed through the forcing cone and choke, so more pellets fly true and stay inside the pattern circle. The Podium wad is designed around this straight wall hull, with a compression zone in the base that cushions the shot column at ignition for softer recoil and steadier patterns.

This is a 2 3/4 inch shell, safe in any 12 gauge chambered 2 3/4 inch or longer. If you shoot registered events that cap payload weight, a one ounce load may be required rather than optional, so check your rulebook.

Honest Notes on One Ounce Number 8
This is the wrong shell for trap and it is worth being blunt about it. A one ounce charge of number 8 does not have the pellet energy for sixteen yard trap targets at the far end of their flight, let alone handicap. Buy Federal All American 1oz 12ga 8 shot for skeet and close sporting and buy a 7.5 load for trap.
Choke matters more with small shot. Number 8 patterns tightly, and skeet or improved cylinder constriction is almost always the right answer. A modified or full choke with this load produces a pattern that is unforgiving on close birds, which is exactly the opposite of what skeet demands.
Recoil reduction is the real selling point and it is worth quantifying honestly. Dropping from 1 1/8 ounces to one ounce cuts roughly twelve percent of the payload, and shooters generally describe the difference as noticeable rather than dramatic. Over two hundred targets it adds up. Over twenty five it does not.
Finally, lead restrictions. Private skeet clubs almost universally allow lead and reclaim it, but a number of ranges on public land now require non toxic shot. Confirm before you travel somewhere new with a case.
For trap targets use the same one ounce shell in number 7.5 shot, and for the standard payload see the 1 1/8 ounce 1145 fps number 8 load. Full factory data is on the Federal Premium product page.
