Description

Federal All American 12ga 1145 fps 8 shot is the same soft shooting All American competition shell as the number 7.5 version, loaded with smaller pellets. The 2 3/4 inch straight wall hull carries 1 1/8 ounces of high antimony lead at 1145 fps behind a Podium wad, and Federal packs it 25 rounds to the box. Part number is FAA12L in number 8 shot.

Why Number 8 Instead of 7.5
Number 8 shot is smaller than 7.5, which means a 1 1/8 ounce charge holds meaningfully more pellets. That extra pellet count fills the pattern, and on close targets a denser pattern breaks more birds than heavier individual pellets do. Skeet targets, close sporting clays presentations and the first two stations of a trap round all live in that range, and this is the shell most people shoot there.
The tradeoff is at distance. A number 8 pellet sheds velocity a little faster and carries less energy than a 7.5, so on a long trap target or a fast crosser at forty yards it starts to chip rather than break. That is the whole reason both sizes exist, and it is why a lot of shooters carry both and switch by station rather than arguing about which is better.
Everything else about this 12 gauge skeet load is identical to the rest of the All American family. High antimony lead resists deformation through the forcing cone and choke, so more pellets stay round and stay in the pattern. The Podium wad is built specifically for the straight wall hull, with a compression zone that cushions the shot column at ignition for softer recoil and steadier patterns.

Honest Notes on Target Loads
Pick the size for the target, not out of habit. If you shoot skeet or close sporting, Federal All American 12ga 1145 fps 8 shot is the right answer. If you shoot handicap trap from the twenty seven yard line, it is the wrong one, and the extra pellet count will not make up for pellets that have run out of energy by the time they reach the clay.
Velocity is deliberately modest here. 1145 fps is slow by modern target shell standards, and that is the point. Less speed means less recoil, and less recoil means the hundredth target of the day looks the same as the first. Faster shells shorten your lead slightly but cost you in consistency over a long event.
Lead shot restrictions apply at a growing number of ranges on public land. Most private trap and skeet clubs still allow it and reclaim the shot, but check before you arrive with a case if you are shooting somewhere new.
Finally, on cost. Competition shells are more expensive than promotional target loads, and for a casual shooter the difference in broken targets is small. If you shoot registered events or high volume practice, the pattern consistency is worth paying for, and the hulls are worth reloading.
For longer trap targets we stock the same shell in number 7.5 shot, and the 1250 fps handicap load covers the back fence. Full factory data is on the Federal Premium product page.
